Daily Inspiration: Meet Vee Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vee Smith.

Hi Vee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started writing music at the age of 14. I was in a hip hop group called Young Boyz. We created music together for a good solid 2 years. We started to fall off with the music together, so we went our on separate ways as far as creativity. I continued to pursue music heavily at the age of 17, but I didn’t take it as seriously as I do now. I started creating music on my own all the way up until I was 18. I decided to take a break from music because it wasn’t going the way I planned. Even though I was taking a break, the urge of creating music would not leave me. I attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN when I was 20. I didn’t record any music while I was there nor did I write.

Around the age of 23 I moved back to Murfreesboro and decided to get back into the music, but this time I would take it seriously. I started recording with a Grammy nominated producer Killa Musiq as well as very known legendary producer Tim Hill. My music started sounding way better than it did before I went to college. I was getting great feedback from my music, but i still felt it wasn’t enough. I’m very competitive with myself, especially when I know I can be better. When I say competitive with myself, I mean I always want to be greater than my last task. As years passed, I opened up for Rittz And Snow Da Product. Both artists were part of Tech N9ne’s label, Strange Music. I continued to do many local shows after that, as well as contests. I released my first Ep “HAYL” in 2020 and just recently released my second Ep “Boarding Pass” in late 2021. Due to the pandemic, I wasn’t able to perform early in 2021.

In late 2021, I managed to perform 12 times in different venues in Middle Tennessee. One performance that stood out from the rest, was my first solo performance on October 23rd at Hot Shotz in Smyrna, TN. I performed a total of 15 songs and it was my very first paid gig.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road during my music career. I had struggles of finding my own identity as far as my sound. I wanted to sound different from other people in the city. It took a while to come into my own sound and it kind of slowed my creativity at the time. I also struggled with people not supporting me. I couldn’t get past the people who knew me and actually speak to me, not wanting me to win. I struggled with not having the connections and how hard it was to promote my music or get it in the right hands.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create music. I specialize in all genres of music but mainly Hip Hop. I’m most proud of my growth as an artist and writer. Having a love for all genres in music and finding things within them to apply to your hip hop style, is what sets me apart from other hip hop artists.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey, is you get more support from strangers than your own people. Regardless of who doesn’t support you, keep going for the ones who do.
