Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Halfhill.
Hi Zach, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My professional career started in graphic design and evolved into art direction. I moved to Nashville at 20 to take a job designing for Journey’s, the shoe store. That job is actually the reason I moved to Nashville in the first place. I had just graduated art school and didn’t have much else going on — sort of a fuck it moment if you will. 12 years and a couple jobs later and I’m still here, even if it’s hardly the same city. I’ve always been a punk and a hardcore kid so starting something like Guerilla Bizkits makes a lot of sense looking back, but if you would’ve told me 10 years ago that this is what I would be doing I would’ve laughed in your face. I mean really…a vegan bizkit shop that sells hardcore records, has a strong focus on mutual aid, supports the queer community, and gives out free condoms – hilarious. It’s crazy what a natural disaster followed by a pandemic 10 days later will do to a person’s idea of reality and what they can or are “supposed to be” doing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Considering we started BECAUSE of covid, not before or during, I’d say it has been fairly smooth but not without struggles. I mean, owning a business is extremely taxing. Not having health insurance is a huge one, but hey! THIS IS AMERICA BABY. The biggest struggle was convincing myself to take the leap and do something for me – something they don’t want you to do or to know is possible. Once you figure that out, it’s all gravy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do all the branding, marketing, design, and photography for Guerilla Bizkits. There are select instances where we reach out to artists that we fuck with to work with us, but broadly speaking it’s all me. It’s the greatest, most rewarding, and well-rounded project I’ve ever worked on and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built. I’ve worked for fortune 500 companies would could never do what we’ve done with our brand and that is something that sometimes money can’t buy. Outside of GB, I’ve done a lot within the music and streetwear industries. I’m mostly proud of my work with legends ALIFE, pleasures and even Playboy. When I got wrote up in hypebeast for the first time, I literally read that article top to bottom all day long.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the food scene here as well as the DIY and hardcore music scenes. I hate how soulless the development has been. Charm is very hard to come by and so are historic, unique quirks in the architecture. At the very least we are starting to get more murals and public art, but we are years behind. Also, I love the woman, but we don’t need another fucking Dolly mural.
