Exploring Life & Business with Andrianna Hampton of Trap Waxx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrianna Hampton.

Hi Andrianna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Waxing Dream Became a Reality Through Hard Work, Determination and Breaking out of My Comfort Zone

As a born and raised Nashvillian, at just 19 years old, I started a lip gloss business called Andri Gloss and shipped my products all over the world. Creating each gloss was a messy and time-consuming process, and the profit margins were slim. I decided to get a “real job” at Kroger to help fund my business, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the workload became too much. I ended up quitting and deciding to further my education instead.

I originally went to aesthetician school because I wanted to learn more about skin and expand into creating skin care products. But once I started the program, I fell in love with body waxing and eyebrow waxing. I no longer had the passion for lip gloss, so I ended up giving all my Andri Gloss products away to a child who wanted to start experimenting with lip gloss.

After finishing aesthetician school, I knew I wanted to take the leap and start my own waxing business. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was determined to make it work. I got creative and made some tough choices, like giving away my $2,000 bedroom set to turn my entire bedroom into a wax room, focusing on eyebrows only at first.

My very first official client was my sister Alexis Odom, and my cousin Kevoney became my second client. I recorded the entire eyebrow waxing and tinting process to use as content to grow my online presence. For the first year, I literally slept on my couch or an air mattress, refusing to take over my daughter’s room.

Despite the sacrifices, I was committed to making this business a success. I recorded videos and used that content to build my online following. But after a while, I felt stuck, not seeing the growth I wanted. That’s when I decided to hire a business coach, Dariel Williamson. It wasn’t easy to hear all the things I was doing wrong, but I knew I had to make changes if I wanted to succeed. I took the advice to heart and implemented it immediately, and the results spoke for themselves.

I also learned that I don’t have to do everything myself – sometimes, it’s better to find business partners or outsource tasks I’m not good at. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, you just have to hire the smartest person.

I finally mustered the courage to lease a professional salon suite eight months after starting my business. Thanks to Shana Amaniampong for giving me the opportunity to secure a suite in her salon suites. Part of what gave me the confidence was setting aside my tax refund in savings, just in case I needed it for rent. I was betting on myself! I understood that relocating to a more professional space would attract more clients. To keep my tax refund untouched, I decided to work with DoorDash and Amazon Flex until I could build enough steady income.

Then, eight months after Shana provided me with a fantastic opportunity at her salon suites, I faced the exciting challenge of opening my own brick-and-mortar salon suite location. It was a fearsome leap, but with the support and encouragement of my parents, Victoria Odom and Andre Stewart, I made it happen. I am immensely grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially my family.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the most significant challenges I encountered was locating a suitable and affordable space for my business. With Nashville’s rapid growth, many locals can no longer afford to live here. I had to be very strategic in choosing the right location for my shop. I understood the risks involved, but I was committed to making it succeed.

Additionally, I quickly realized that in the beauty industry, sometimes being an aesthetician that waxes can be the last service on the list for people to obtain. Majority of people tend to prioritize hair, and nails before getting a wax.

Another challenge was managing the financial strain of starting a business from scratch. I was living on a tight budget, sometimes having to pick up side jobs like DoorDash and Amazon Flex to cover the rent for my salon suite. It was tough, but I refused to give up.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in full-body waxing, Brazilian waxing, bikini care, and brow tinting. What sets us apart is our commitment to quality over quantity. We never rush, and our Brazilian waxing service includes a gel mask, ingrown hair extractions, and an extended bikini and stomach strip – included perks that cost extra at every other waxing studio.

We also offer full-body and half-body waxing packages at discounted rates, and we provide free tampons, wipes, and pads in our restrooms. Additionally, we are by appointment only, so we don’t accept walk-ins, ensuring a personalized and stress-free experience for each client.

In addition to excelling in body waxing, brow tinting, and bikini care, I also love teaching others the steps to opening their own businesses, building personal/business credit, and investing.

What’s next?
As for the future, I’m still exploring my options and figuring out the next steps for Trap Waxx. One thing I do know is that I’m committed to continuing to grow and evolve my business in a way that best serves my clients and the local community.
