Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlo Nugent.
Hi Arlo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
After receiving my degree in International Business in East Tennessee, I moved to South Korea where I started a company. I recognized an opportunity, but it was in a field for which I had zero passion. After 3 years, I sold the business to an investor out of Chicago and bought a one-way ticket to San Diego to pursue my dream of becoming a real estate agent.
San Diego was brand new to me. The year was 2008 and the market had just crashed. People told me I was making a huge mistake and would burn through my savings and profit from selling the company in Korea. They were right.
However, after a brutal first year, I was able to thrive after aligning myself with the right people. 13 years later, I own and operate one of the top real estate companies in San Diego and have expanded into the Nashville market.
Having grown up in Tennessee, it has been extremely rewarding for me to be able to call Brentwood home and split time between my two offices.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If anyone with an ounce of success claims it was a smooth road, they are either lying or have not truly achieved anything anywhere close to their full potential.
I openly share my tax returns from my 1st year in real estate on social media. I made $547.20 in 2008.
In year 2, I made around $80K. However, I had no idea I would get nailed the way I did by the IRS. Taxes were due and I had around $2K to my name.
Today, my income is 7 figures annually. It didn’t happen from reading a book, learning an industry secret, etc. My success today is solely based on intentionally putting myself in the right room with the right people. I have surrounded myself with people who are where I want to be in 5 years.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Blue Chip Realty Group. We provide residential real estate services in San Diego and Nashville. I have been recognized as being in the top 1.5% of all real estate agents in the country (out of over 2.5M) and was named Real Estate Agent of The Year in 2022 by Expertise.com.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Calculated risks should be taken. It’s important that there are measurable elements and deadlines/firm expectations to determine when it’s time to cut and run or if the risk paid off.
The biggest professional risk I’ve taken was selling a thriving company to pursue a new career. Passion drove my decision, not rational thought. Rational thought would have told me to stay where I am because it was safe.
It turned out to be the best business decision I’ve ever made (so far).
