Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Kannel
Hi Brittney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up my mom was a hairstylist. I loved being in the salon and seeing how flexible her schedule was. I was always more artistic and creative and loved doing hair and make up. At the end of high school I decided to go to beauty school and figured I could go to college after if I wanted too. I never imagined it would turn into the successful career I have today. I got my license and started doing hair at 19 and feel so blessed to have found what I love doing at such a young age. I’m originally from Livermore, CA and loved growing up there. In my early twenties I moved to Texas and did a few other jobs. I then moved to Maui HI where I worked on organic farms. I really missed doing hair after those few years and decided to move back to California and really focus on my career. I’m so thankful for the life experiences in Texas and Hawaii and I’m glad I stepped away from hair for a little bit because it really confirmed it was what I wanted to do. I worked at two different salons when I moved back to California. The first one along side my mom which was special. I’m also so grateful to have grown up with self employed/entrepreneur parents to first hand walk me through the business side of my job. And the second salon I feel I really grew my skill set. I truly cherish every salon family I’ve been apart of through my career. Some of my coworkers to this day are my best friends. Fast forward to covid and it was time to leave California once again. A friend and I had already decided we wanted to move pre covid but we rerouted our path to Denver to Tennessee instead! Building a new clientele in franklin, TN has gone better then I could have imagined. In the past almost 4 years I have grown so much as a hairstylist and business women. The key is to never stop learning and never stop being creative and trying new things. I’m so thankful for my Tennessee salon family and all my wonderful clients here. I miss something about everywhere I’ve lived and have learned nowhere is perfect… but this Nashville area is a pretty special place!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running your own business I think is always a little scary. I remember it feeling overwhelming in the beginning. Also this industry is very humbling. Everyone has a bad day and we’re all human so mistakes happen. I think it’s how you handle the situation is what matters. Owning your mistakes while also having boundaries and being professional. For me working on my communication was and is key. This job is not only about your skills but also you. I want my clients to feel better from the inside out after leaving my chair.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Beauty By Britt ?
While I’ve done a lot of wedding hair and makeup in the past (and I still do a few a year) these days I specialize in blonding and extensions. Extensions have really become a passion of mine. I love giving people their dream hair! The transformation in just a couple hours is so satisfying.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Doing something you truly enjoy and feel proud of, that also provides enough for you to live a life you love.
