Exploring Life & Business with Chris King of King Business & Financial Management LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris King.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I was born and raised in the soulful city of Memphis, TN! I attended  the University of Tennessee at Martin, where I received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. I’ve always had a passion for music, even though I have zero musical talent like my clients, but I had no idea there was a music industry path for my love of accounting.

After graduating, I moved to Nashville, where my fiancé was born and raised, and she was still in school. After 3 months, I started my professional career at the business management firm Flood, Bumstead, McCready, and McCarthy, Inc doing business and financial management work for touring artists and songwriters. I quickly rose through the ranks to Account Manager during the 6 plus years I was with the firm. After 7 years, I decided I wanted to start my firm and build long-lasting relationships with the knowledge I had gained. When I first departed, I became a Partner at Blue Sky Group Business Management and spent 4 years heading their entertainment business management division.

In 2019, I split from BSG with all of the clients/businesses I had built throughout the 4 years and started King Business and Financial Management LLC (KBFM) with myself and one employee. Here we are 3 years later with a staff of 10 and over 30 clients.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth?
It has not been an easy road deciding to enter the world of an entrepreneur. There have been months of zero incoming cash and then other months of six-figure income – it’s not as straightforward as a regular bi-weekly paycheck. Plenty of times questioned if what I was doing was right for my family. The lows are low, but the highs are high! I wouldn’t change it for the world.

We’ve been impressed with King Business & Financial Management LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What makes you happy?
To me, there is no better feeling in the world than starting to work with an artist at a young / the starting point of their career with seeing them play their first Nashville show at the OG Basement in front of 50 people, to playing in front of a sold-out Bridgestone Arena! That is the ultimate goal of an artist, and being a small part of watching a dream come true is amazing. As their business managers (in other words, CFO), we get to travel through the ups and downs with them. We educate them on their business, so they know how it works and can obtain their dreams.
