Exploring Life & Business with Christy Wilson of Flourish Financials

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Wilson

Hi Christy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I actually started my career in accounting back in 2008 after earning my degree. I spent several years working in audit and tax firms, which gave me a strong foundation, but I always knew I wanted something different.

After having kids, I thought that I wanted to stay home. And while I loved it, I quickly realized that I needed to have something for myself. My grandfather and dad were great photographers and I had been around it my whole life. I photographed my first family session in 2015 and fell in love. I So my husband and I bought a $500 Nikon camera and said whatever I made from photography that year, I would put back in and make a business. So I decided to take a leap and turn my passion for photography into a business. That journey was incredible—I built a six-figure business as a wedding photographer. It was wonderful and I enjoyed it so much!

But along the way, I realized just how challenging it was for many business owners to really get a handle on their finances. I’d hear so many women in the wedding and creative industries say things like, ‘I just don’t understand the numbers,’ or, ‘I don’t know where my money is going.’ It struck me that there was a real need for support in that area and it was something that came so naturally to me.

In 2021, I decided to bring my two worlds together—my love of entrepreneurship and my accounting expertise—and started Flourish Financials. It’s been such a rewarding experience to help women not only clean up their books but also truly understand their finances. I believe when you know your numbers, you gain so much confidence and control in your business. That’s the heart of what I do—helping women grow and flourish by taking the stress out of their finances.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it’s been anything but a smooth road—more like a winding one with plenty of bumps along the way! Transitioning from a traditional accounting job to running my own business was a huge learning curve. When I started my photography business, I had to figure out everything—marketing, client management, pricing—none of which was taught in accounting school. It was exciting but overwhelming, especially while raising two kids.

When I shifted gears to launch Flourish Financials, there were entirely new challenges. Balancing client work with building systems and processes for the business was tough. I also had to face imposter syndrome—I kept wondering, ‘Can I really do this? Will people trust me with such an important part of their business?’

One of the hardest parts has been managing growth. I’ve learned that as you grow, the work doesn’t just multiply—it changes. You go from doing everything yourself to hiring and managing a team, which comes with its own set of challenges. I’ve had to make some difficult decisions, like letting people go or restructuring roles, which has been a learning experience for sure.

That said, every struggle has taught me something valuable. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, ask for help when I need it, and give myself grace when things don’t go perfectly. Building a business is never easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you look back and see how far you’ve come.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Flourish Financials?
Flourish Financials is all about empowering women entrepreneurs—especially those in the wedding and creative industries—to feel confident and in control of their finances. I provide bookkeeping and financial consulting services that go beyond just managing numbers. My focus is on helping clients understand what their numbers mean and how to use that knowledge to grow their businesses.

What sets us apart is the personalized, approachable way we work. I know firsthand how overwhelming the financial side of a business can feel—especially for creative entrepreneurs—and I’ve made it my mission to change that. It’s not just about reconciling accounts or organizing data; it’s about creating clarity and actionable insights that help business owners thrive. Most of my clients are running successful businesses, but they come to me feeling stuck or unsure how to manage profitability and growth. That’s where I step in.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. I’ve been told time and again that I make finances feel approachable and not so scary—which is probably the highest compliment an accountant can receive! Obviously we work on the bookkeeping side of things, but we do quarterly financial reviews, where we go over profit and loss statements, analyze trends, and identify opportunities. It’s been a game-changer for so many of my clients.

What I really want people to know is that their finances don’t have to feel intimidating. With the right support, you can completely transform how you see your business and make decisions with confidence. That’s what Flourish Financials is all about—helping women feel empowered, supported, and excited about the possibilities for their businesses to truly flourish.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Building a strong network has been such a huge part of my journey, and my best advice is to start by being intentional about what you’re looking for. Think about your goals and where you might need guidance—whether it’s business strategy, work-life balance, or growing a specific skill set—and then seek out people who align with those areas.

For me, it’s been all about putting myself in the right spaces. I’ve joined groups like Braintrust, which connects women business owners, and WIPA, where I’m the Treasurer on the Board and Heels and Handshakes, which connects women entrepreneurs in Nashville. They have given me access to amazing women who understand the unique challenges of entrepreneurship. If you’re in the creative or wedding industry, associations like these can be invaluable because you’re instantly surrounded by people who ‘get it.’

When it comes to networking, I’ve found that the key is to focus on building real relationships, not just collecting contacts. Be genuine—ask questions, share your story, and don’t be afraid to be a little vulnerable. Some of my best connections have come from simply saying, ‘Hey, I’m struggling with this—have you ever been through something similar?’ You’d be amazed at how willing people are to help when you’re authentic.

One thing that’s worked well for me is showing up consistently. Whether it’s attending events, joining mastermind groups, or even just engaging with people on Social Media, being present and active makes a big difference. And don’t overlook the value of giving back—offering to help someone or sharing your expertise is a great way to build trust and relationships.
