Exploring Life & Business with Cindy Boyle of Big Five Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Boyle.

Cindy Boyle

Hi Cindy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Fitness has always been more than just a job for me, it’s been a way to connect with people, to help them find strength in moments they didn’t think they had any left. I’ve worked in the fitness industry for years, coaching people at all levels, and what’s always mattered most to me is how movement can change someone’s relationship with themselves.

I’m originally from South Africa, and the name Big Five Fitness is a nod to both my roots and the values we hold. Resilience, strength, and presence. The Big Five animals are known for their power and courage, and we carry that energy into everything we do. The name also reflects the five foundational movements we focus on: push, pull, hinge, squat, and lunge. Simple, effective, real-life strength.

I’m also a wife and a mom to two boys who have been my biggest supporters. Starting Big Five was scary, leaving the comfort of what I knew to build something from the ground up, but it was driven by a purpose I couldn’t ignore. I wanted to create a space where people felt safe to show up exactly as they are, where community matters, and where the focus isn’t just on how you look, but how you feel and what your body can do.

Every time someone walks through our doors and starts believing in themselves a little more. That’s the “why” behind everything.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. It actually took a few failed attempts before Big Five became what it is today. There were moments when it felt like we were right on the edge of making the dream happen and then everything would fall apart. Locations that didn’t work out, plans that crumbled, times we gave everything we had and it still wasn’t enough. It was heartbreaking.

There’s a unique kind of pain in chasing something you believe in so deeply and watching it slip through your fingers. But each of those setbacks taught us something. They made us tougher, more grounded, and even more committed to building something that really mattered.

The biggest challenge, though, hasn’t been external, it’s been internal. Letting go of fear. Pushing through self-doubt. Fighting the voice that says, “What if this still isn’t enough?” When you care this much, the setbacks feel personal. But the growth comes from learning to trust yourself anyway.

Those hard seasons shaped the heart of Big Five. And now, every time someone tells us this place feels like home, it reminds me that the struggle was worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Big Five Fitness is a functional fitness gym focused on building real-life strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular health. Our program is built around five foundational movement patterns; push, pull, hinge, squat, and lunge, which we train through a balanced mix of strength and conditioning days. Every workout is designed to help people move better, feel stronger, and build lasting endurance that supports them in and out of the gym.

What sets us apart is the environment we’ve created. It’s not just about fitness, it’s about people. We’re proud of the community we’ve built: welcoming, encouraging, and committed. There’s no ego here, no expectation that you have to show up already fit. Just people who care about their health, their growth, and each other.

Our coaches are intentional and hands-on. We know our members, we support their goals, and we challenge them with programming that works. We also offer one-on-one guidance, help with nutrition and lifestyle habits, and we meet people exactly where they’re at whether they’re just starting out or ready to level up.

What I want readers to know is this: you don’t have to be in shape to join. You don’t need to know what you’re doing. You just have to start and we’ll meet you there. At Big Five, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing up, doing the work, and becoming stronger in every way.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories revolve around family. As the youngest of five kids, I always had a lot of love and energy around me. Some of my fondest moments were going on runs with my dad and celebrating birthdays by going out to eat. It felt like such a treat, and I loved having a big family to share those moments with
