Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara O’Donnell.
Hi Clara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got into hairstyling because I remember how good I always felt after leaving the salon — more confident, more like myself — and I knew I wanted to pass that feeling along to others. That simple spark led me into the beauty industry, but my journey hasn’t been without detours.
Along the way, I faced some tough challenges. I was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called pseudotumor cerebri, which forced me to step away from the salon for a while and teach cosmetology instead. At the same time, I was struggling with alcoholism, which held me back in more ways than I realized at the time.
But I’m proud to say that as of July 13, 2025, I’m six years alcohol-free. My condition is under control, and I now own my own small business where I get to do what I love every day — not just making people feel beautiful through hair, but also sharing other parts of myself through handmade soaps and crafts. It’s been a winding road, but it’s led me somewhere really meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful growth comes from the bumps along the way. One of my biggest struggles has been my health. Living with pseudotumor cerebri, a rare brain condition, meant I had to step back from behind the chair and pivot into teaching for a while. It was frustrating to feel like my body was holding me back from what I loved.
Another major challenge was my relationship with alcohol. For years, it quietly affected my confidence, my focus, and my ability to show up fully — both personally and professionally. Getting sober was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also the most life-changing.
Now, I have a deeper appreciation for everything — from the clients in my chair to the creativity I get to bring into my work every day. Those struggles didn’t stop me — they shaped me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Studio Aura?
Studio Aura is more than just a salon — it’s a space where beauty, creativity, and healing meet. I specialize in lived-in color, blonding transformations, color retouches, and extensions, but what really makes my work unique is the energy I bring to the experience. My goal isn’t just to make people look great — it’s to help them feel amazing from the inside out.
Clients come to me for more than a service — they come for a reset. I’ve created a relaxing, welcoming space where you can breathe, let go, and leave feeling empowered. Alongside hair services, I also offer my handmade soaps and crafts, so there’s a personal, soulful touch to everything I do.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand that’s rooted in authenticity and intention. At Studio Aura, it’s not about keeping up with trends — it’s about aligning with what makes you feel like your most radiant self.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
To me, risk is part of growth — it’s uncomfortable, unpredictable, and often necessary. Some of the biggest risks I’ve taken didn’t look brave at the time — they looked like survival. Getting sober was one of them. Leaving behind familiar but unhealthy patterns meant stepping into the unknown, and rebuilding my life from the inside out.
Starting my own business was another big risk. After years of health setbacks and detours, betting on myself felt terrifying — but also incredibly empowering. I didn’t have everything figured out, but I knew I wanted to create a space that reflected my values and passion.
I don’t think you have to feel fearless to take risks. You just have to be willing to move forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. I’ve learned that the most meaningful things in my life have come from choosing to trust myself and take the leap anyway.
