Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Shaw.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age going to Slim Dusty concerts with my parents especially, my late Dad was a very early memory.
We mixed with local and mainland artists such as Jimmy Little and Jean Stafford, going to their concerts and having them visit at home. Music was everywhere in our home.
Music was my connection to dad after he died when my sister and Music was my connection to dad after he died when my sister and I were young….. music was a huge part of our home and who I am and who he was from weekly square dancing to singing to mum Hey Good Lookin’ at tea time.
I remember seeing Keith Urban at a Slim Dusty show I’ll never forget seeing him then in his purple and grey happy pants.
I have followed my passion and having my show do so well is a dream come true. It has been a lot of work as it has been a new era in an evolving platform and throughout Covid in particular. Artists have had to adapt to a new way of presenting themselves and reaching a new audience.
I have always traveled to music shows whenever I could attending Tamworth Country Music Festival currently celebrating its 50th year, Groundwater in Queensland, Gympie Music Muster. I have had excellent support from well-known artists such as Adam Brand and new artists like Bo Ness. I have been asked to some other interviews and find it amazing that I am the one on the other side.
Career-wise to date, I trained in Disability Services at 16 going on to become an Enrolled Nurse specializing in community and aged care. I have a passion to give back to the community and became a volunteer firefighter in my local area.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Living on an island restricts easy access to shows. Building a relatively new platform and learning the skills needed such as understanding algorithms and website marketing was hard.
Finding the right people to guide the way and building good relationships has been a challenge but rewarding. Learned a lot about people as there have been a lot of new artists requesting to be on my show looking for new ways to market their brand and they are learning too.
Challenges to come involve widening my reach and learning how to ask for sponsorship and self-marketing
We’ve been impressed with Country Kickback, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Started Country Kickback in February 2019. Originally doing a weekly interview for new release music but now has expanded to multiple interviews each week, radio airtime, working with artists on tour, and organizing events.
The show now reaches the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Sweden, and Germany to name a few. Request for time on my show has increased more than I could imagine.
I have had tremendous support from many friends and fans enabling the show to showcase the music of all genres around the WOrld.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Also, I have had personal hurdles to overcome with a spinal cord injury and being unable to get the surgical treatment I needed during Covid.
This has left me with permanent residual injury and it has been a long haul to get over this. My music has been my lifeline and the people who have maintained contact with me have given me the boost I have needed.
Before Covid, there weren’t many similar platforms and now it is accepted as normal and people are looking for these programs. I did one of the first online music festivals and this has now taken off.
