Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Garrett Zavesky of You Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Garrett Zavesky.

Hi Dr. Garrett, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in the southern suburbs of Illinois for 27 years and moved down to Nashville in January of 2023. I became a chiropractor because of an exceptional experience that I had. When I was a sophomore in undergraduate college I was certain I was going to be a physical therapist. That summer I shadowed a chiropractor who had treated my mom for shoulder pain. This shoulder pain had ailed her for 8+ years and she went through countless treatments to try to relieve it.

After seeing this chiropractor 1 time, she said her shoulder was 95% better. The philosophy of this chiropractor was to get patients out of pain as fast as humanly possible without the use of medication, injections, or surgery. I truly appreciated how this chiropractor treated and cared for his patients so I would shadow him 2-3x a week to learn more about the profession. After a summer of shadowing, I decided that was what I wanted to do-get people out of pain as fast as humanly possible. I started chiropractic school the following fall and worked under that same chiropractor for 2 years after graduating in December 2020.

I decided I wanted to make a change in my life so in January 2023 I decided to move to Nashville Tennessee, which I grew to love. I did not know a single soul living in Nashville, but was excited about the journey and am embracing it to the fullest. I am working right now to open up my own private practice to spread all that I have learned in the 7+ years of knowing my mentor. I am excited about this journey and determined to help as many members of the Nashville community as possible!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I graduated from chiropractic college in December 2020. This was directly in the middle of the Covid-19 outbreak.

My original plan to bring in new patients was to shake as many hands as possible and meet as many business owners as I could. Obviously, due to social distancing, this was not possible at the time. That is when I decided to pivot on that decision and start meeting people through social media. When I first started at the clinic I was deemed ‘The Worst Millenial’, because I did not use social media very often and I had no knowledge of how to do anything. Through taking an online course, reading a few books, and watching as many youtube videos as I could, I was able to figure out (somewhat) how to use social media.

The second, and largest, obstacle I have encountered is moving to a brand new state. I lived within the same 40-mile radius in central Illinois for my entire life. It was a difficult decision, but I knew that I needed change. I had visited Nashville 4x and loved everything about it. I decided to take a risk and make a huge change in my life by moving here. It has been a fun and a little intimidating experience so far, but I welcome the challenge that it brings!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently working on opening my practice in the Germantown area and it will hopefully be open in the mid-late spring.

You Chiropractic is going to be a chiropractic clinic designed around the wants and needs of my patients.

Some patients want to come in for a few visits until their pain is resolved. Some patients want to come in consistently to prevent future injury. Some patients come in just because it feels good. I want each patient to be able to go down whichever path they feel is necessary for their own lives.

I work to get patients out of pain as fast as humanly possible without the use of injections, medication, or surgery. I find that pain comes from two different parts of the body. The first is the actual physical body, meaning that your muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and fascia are the reason you have pain. I fix these problems with the use of chiropractic adjustments, functional dry needling, McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, flexion distraction, and fascial distortion.

The other area that is less often thought of is the brain. Your brain is the computer hard drive that runs your entire body. If you have stress, tension, and anxiety in your brain it can affect your physical body and also cause pain. To treat this I will use a unique approach. I will have a speaker set up in the room where a patient will be instructed to put on whatever music they enjoy listening to the most. Along with this, throughout the appointment, each patient will talk with me about whatever they wish to share.

Days are very busy and many people do not have time to enjoy what interests them. Each appointment will be dedicated to talking about exactly that. Whether it is Predators hockey, motorcycles, gardening, your brand new puppy, or your children, I want you to talk about what makes you the happiest while I work on your physical body. This approach of treating both the brain, in a fun and creative way, and the body will have patients feeling better and leaving with a smile on their face.

You Chiropractic is going to be different than a standard stuffy medical office. It will be a doctor’s office that you look forward to going to because you will listen to your music, talk about your interests, and have your body feeling better.

The reason I came up with this model is because of many of the patients that I saw at my previous clinic in Illinois. In the past medical history section for our new patient paperwork, many patients would mark that they suffer from depression and anxiety. I know what I do will not cure this, but taking the time to talk about another person’s interest, become genuinely interested in them, and allow them to listen to their favorite music will move them in the right direction.

I am most proud of my brand because it is all about YOU, the patient. Many physicians do not spend enough time with their patients, and it is my goal to make everything I do about them and what they want. I am passionate about helping as many people as I can and hope that the message of my clinic resonates with many of YOU.

What makes you happy?
Business: It is very fulfilling to help chronic pain patients. When patients tell me they haven’t been able to do something for 10+ years because of pain or dysfunction, I do everything I can to make sure that patient is able to do what they want to do. Sometimes it happens quickly, and sometimes it takes time, but knowing that I made a significant difference in someone’s life is the most rewarding thing there is.

Personal: My number 1 passion is basketball. I worked for DePaul University’s basketball team when I went there for undergrad and that further developed my love for it. If I have free time I would play basketball with other people or stay in an empty gym by myself for hours and just shoot baskets until my arms fall off. Outside of basketball I am very very competitive and will play pretty much any game I can get my hands on. I love spending time with my girlfriend exploring the city and spending time with my dog (the best dog to ever exist).
