Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Da Konnect.
Hi Gary , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into videography honestly started by accident. I was just shooting content for my sister-in-law, SuGnasty, when an opportunity came up that completely changed the direction of my life.
A videographer had canceled on a fraternity event, and they asked me if I was a videographer. I probably should’ve been honest and said I was just getting started… but instead, I said yes. 😂 That little “yes” turned into my first real gig.
I showed up, figured it out, and delivered. What I didn’t expect was what happened next: they booked me for more events, and before I knew it, I was booked for the remainder of the school year working with fraternities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
That experience gave me the confidence, portfolio, and momentum to take videography seriously. What started as me simply creating content for family and saying “yes” to an opportunity I probably wasn’t fully ready for turned into a real passion and a business.
Looking back, I’m grateful I took that chance. Sometimes you don’t feel ready until you say yes and figure it out along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of my journey has been learning as I go and figuring things out through experience rather than having everything mapped out from the beginning.
One of the biggest struggles has been building confidence and learning to see myself as a legitimate videographer. I got my first opportunity almost by accident, so there was always that feeling of, “Am I really ready for this?” I had to learn how to trust my creativity, improve my skills, invest in better equipment, and consistently deliver work that I could be proud of.
There have also been the normal challenges that come with being a creative and building something for yourself—finding consistent work, balancing different clients and expectations, dealing with slow periods, and constantly pushing myself to get better.
But honestly, those struggles have been some of the most valuable parts of the journey. They’ve forced me to grow, become more confident, and realize that I don’t have to have everything figured out before I take the next opportunity. Sometimes you just have to say yes, learn along the way, and keep going.
We’ve been impressed with Da Konnect Promotions , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is centered around videography and visual storytelling. I specialize in creating engaging, high-energy content that captures not just what an event or brand looks like, but how it feels. Whether I’m filming events, social media content, promotional videos, or working with organizations and individuals, my goal is always to create something that people actually want to watch and remember.
What sets me apart is that I’m not just showing up with a camera and pressing record. I really focus on understanding the person, brand, or event I’m working with and finding the moments that make the story unique. I want my clients to feel like they’re getting more than a video—they’re getting a piece of their story that they can use to connect with their audience.
A big part of my brand has been built around authenticity, creativity, and being willing to take chances. I didn’t start with a huge production company or years of experience. I started by saying yes to an opportunity, learning on the fly, and turning that opportunity into something bigger. That has shaped the way I approach my work today. I’m always willing to try something new, push myself creatively, and find a different way to tell a story.
What I’m most proud of from a brand perspective is how organically it has grown. I went from shooting content for family to getting my first opportunity through a last-minute cancellation and then being booked for the remainder of the school year with fraternities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. That experience showed me that there was real value in what I was creating and gave me the confidence to continue building.
Ultimately, I want people to know that my brand is about capturing real moments and turning them into something memorable. I’m not interested in creating content just for the sake of having content. I want every project to have personality, energy, and a story behind it—and I want my clients to walk away feeling like I captured exactly what they envisioned, or even better than they imagined.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as growth, freedom, and being proud of what I’m building. For me, success isn’t just about how much money I make or how many clients I have. It’s about being able to look back and see how far I’ve come from taking that first opportunity when I was just starting out.
Success is having the freedom to create, work with people I genuinely enjoy, and turn my creativity into something that provides opportunities for me and the people around me. It’s also about continuing to learn, getting better at my craft, and being trusted by clients to bring their vision to life.
Most importantly, I think success is being able to say, “I built this.” What started as me taking a chance and saying yes to something I wasn’t completely prepared for has grown into something real. If I can continue growing my brand, creating work that I’m proud of, and inspiring other people to take a chance on themselves, I consider that success.
