Hatton Smith, Campesino Rum founder, was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993. At the age of 19, he moved to Panama to live off the grid in a remote area along the Pacora River to explore the Charges Panamanian National Forest. Three years later on a return visit to Panama, he came to find a 125 gallon rum still had been left in the jungle at the base of an old hiking trail. Hatton build a bed beside the still, and began illegally distilling and selling his product out of the jungle for the next two years. At the age of 25, he moved back to the US and founded Campesino Rum with the mission to start a rum revolution getting the general public to re-imagine the way they think about rum. Hatton creates aged rum blends from the world’s finest rum distilleries without the usage of additives such as sugar, color, flavors, or blending materials. Hatton is an avid skydiver, outdoorsman, and beverage enthusiast who currently resides in Nashville, TN where he acts as President and CEO of Campesino Rum.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Campesino Rum entered the state of TN on the day of the Nashville 2020 tornado. Best Brands, Campesino Rum’s distribution partner’s warehouse was hit by the tornado delaying the initial Tennessee launch. Two weeks later COVID-19 swept the world. Since then, Campesino Rum has climbed back to the top, and is now the #1 selling rum across all premises & SKUs for Best Brands in TN.
