Exploring Life & Business with Kendra Hughes of Crown Town Head Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Hughes

Hi Kendra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Wichita, KS where I lived until July of 2021.
I began my career as a registered nurse and did that for a few years. I loved being a nurse, but I had a vision for more. Once I decided that I wanted to transition from Nursing to something in Business, I went back to school for my Business Degree.
While I was finishing that degree, I became intrigued with Sales, specifically Medical Sales.
Shortly after I graduated, I was approached by a Medical Sales recruiter on LinkedIn and, after a long interview process, was offered the role. I have been a Medical Sales Representative for over five years and continue to do that full-time.
In April of 2021, my Area Vice President called me and asked if I wanted to move to Nashville, and I said “yes!”. A few short months later, I moved to Gallatin for my career in Medical Sales.
Last May, I saw a reel of a head spa service on Instagram and thought it looked really cool, so I booked an appointment. There was no head spas in the Gallatin area, though, and I ended up driving to Brentwood for my service.
I also noted that they were booked an entire month out, which I found interesting at the time.
After my head spa service, I knew I could do the same thing in the Gallatin area and do it better than they did. So, I hired a business consultant who owns a couple of head spas in Kansas, and began the process of starting my own business (ie LLC paperwork, business licenses, hiring employees, signing a commercial lease, etc).
After a few months of prep work, I opened the doors to my business on Novermber 11, 2024. I’ve received a ton of support from the community ever since and business is great!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth at all. There were a ton of challenges to overcome, and still are.
Some of the struggles were finding the right employees. It’s important to me that my employees share my vision and uphold a certain standard. It’s also difficult to hire people for a service that many of them hadn’t even heard of at the time I was recruiting them. My employees also have to be licensed by the state, so my spa was subject to state board of Cosmetology inspections prior to opening.
I wasn’t sure what hair products and scalp tools I needed for the services, so that required a ton of research and connecting with others in the industry.
My biggest challenge was getting into an industry that I knew nothing about. I was in healthcare and sales….hair is a whole other monster. But I was proactive and intentional about learning everything I needed to know. My goal is to differentiate myself from my competitors, and I couldn’t do that until I knew everything there was to know about hair care, scalp care, and the head spa process itself.
Starting this business from nothing was very difficult, but it was worth every tear and moment of frustration along the way.
Now, I have a solid team behind me and a business that is all mine, and that is extremely rewarding to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of Crown Town Head Spa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a head spa. I have three service levels….Duchess, Princess, and Queen. Each service builds on the previous and increases in time and cost.
My head spa is centered on a theme of Royalty because I believe that’s how everyone should feel when they walk through my doors.
While a head spa is very relaxing, that is not how I’m selling my services. I want my clients to understand that there is a clinical benefit to head spa, especially if they suffer from any hair or scalp issues.
When my clients arrive, they are given a scalp analysis with a camera that magnifies the images of their scalp by 200x. The client’s service is then built around what’s discovered during the scalp analysis. We tailor each treatment to the individual needs of every client.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory actually revolves around Christmas time.
I grew up in a large family…with 5 aunts and uncles on my mom’s side.
When I was little, we would all go out to my Grandma’s house every Christmas Eve to celebrate the season. I looked forward to those Christmas Eve gatherings every year growing up.
Eventually, our family got so big that we outgrew Grandma’s little ranch-style home, and that was great, but nothing was ever as great as when Grandma hosted our Christmas Eve family gatherings.
