Exploring Life & Business with Kenneth Huckaby of High Score Dispensary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Huckaby.

Kenneth Huckaby

Hi Kenneth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I think we have all had the vision or a dream when we were younger of taking a hobby and turning it into a business. We would be hanging out with friends and say “man what if you could make money doing this thing.” My “thing” just happened to be arcade games and cannabis. Here we are twenty (20) years in the making, and many different jobs and experiences along the way, and I managed to turn my thing into a business.

After my wife and I got married, I returned to school and began working in the cannabis industry in Nashville while in school. Almost instantly we knew that being in the cannabis industry was what the future had in store for us! My wife and I founded our company WNU (which stands for “Why Not Us” and was our mantra every step of the way), set up High Score Dispensary on the historic square in Springfield, TN and the rest you’ll have to see for yourself when you come visit!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Many purveyors of cannabis and cannabis users in Tennessee have experienced the ups and downs of the legality of cannabis on Tennessee over the years, and we certainly have had to work through certain barriers along the way. The landscape has changed several times over the last couple of years, to the point where it feels there is a new change in the laws and regulations nearly every day. For example, we had to move locations not long after first opening High Score because the rules and regulations had changed again and we were forced to move to a new building a few blocks over. We have been incredibly lucky to have a support system and customer base that supported and followed us through that move, but it was certainly stressful for a time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When people ask us “what should we know” about your business, it is always an interesting question to me. The first thing I usually tell people about our store is that we provide cannabis education first, because there is so much misinformation and stigma associated with this industry, and we believe that knowledge is the first step to a good experience. We also are incredibly focused on and proud of the quality of our products and the knowledge and experience our staff bring to the table. We are intentional in the way that we source our products and source product from some of the best farms and manufacturers in the state and across the country. Most importantly, we have outstanding “budtenders” who really make the difference at High Score Dispensary. We believe that the faces you see every time you walk into High Score are the most important part of the experience, and we could not do what we do without our staff. From their incredible knowledge of cannabis to their unmatched friendliness and warmth, they are the best part of High Score for sure!
The last thing I really want to point out is that we have a full dab bar available, with multiple different devices and concentrates to choose from, which takes the sort of “grab-and-go” experience of a dispensary and turns it into a gathering space, just like a bar, where you can come hang out with your friends, our budtenders, or new friends you meet while hanging out at the bar! We also have a fully functioning arcade, including several pinball machines and arcade cabinets, to enjoy while you hang out with us. We have a wide variety of in-store experiences and a whole lot more you can take home with you too!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
As someone who is also just starting out, always have a back-up plan. You may not think you will need one, but you will definitely need one at some point along the way.
