Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurt Willis.
Kurt, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started about 10 years ago when my brother and co-founder, Shaun Willis, graduated from a software development bootcamp in Nashville and began making the rounds to networking events. When he ultimately came up short in Murfreesboro, he decided to start one and what started out as a couple guys and gals at a coffee shop has now grown to over 750 members. In an effort to funnel work through the community to help them thrive in the industry, we created the Boro Dev Agency, along with our third partner Tyler Vaughn. That community makes up our talent pool of software developers, product managers, project managers, designers, quality control, fractional CTOs and fractional CAIOs all local to middle TN with an avg of 10+ yrs of experience and some as much as 25yrs+. Giving us the ability to deliver as a full-service tech partner and on-demand resource at an expert level, adapt to any size project and stay within budget while being just a phone call away.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a bootstrapped agency comes with many challenges and the custom software and AI industry has their own set of challenges as well. We struggled initially to adapt to an ever changing market but have found our footing by pivoting our offerings to align more with our clients to better serve their unique needs and budget restrictions. Bootstrapped usually means minimal to no marketing budget so we’ve leaned heavily on our community and networks for referrals and word of mouth to grow the business.

What are your plans for the future?
We’re in the process of turning our community into a startup incubator. To continue to foster growth by helping them turn their ideas into businesses through coaching, mentorship and eventually funding through BDA Ventures, which will be comprised of a select few, invite-only fund of Angels and PE. The future is to turn Murfreesboro into a thriving tech hub.
