Exploring Life & Business with Lily Boss of Designed By Lily

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lily Boss.

Lily Boss

Hi Lily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 6, when my family built our home, I developed an interest in the process. By 11, I wanted to become an architect and was always finding ways to rearrange or change my room.

Once I entered high school, I realized math wasn’t my strongest ability and found a passion for the design side of things. I applied and was enrolled at MTSU for a four-year degree; before the semester started, I decided that wasn’t the best route for me, so I withdrew and found a school in California that offered Certification courses.

During that semester, I learned hand drafting and many other qualities all interior designers need. My original intent after graduating was to find an internship or mentor to learn under in the real world, after weeks of searching, without any luck, I decided to jump in head first and open my own business!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no, I have been blessed with family and friends who have supported me over the past year and a half, always rooting for me.

That doesn’t detract from the difficulties of running your own business, especially at 18. I struggle with imposter syndrome frequently, and a lack of confidence is probably my biggest roadblock. There will always be ups and downs, especially in a business heavily reliant on the economy.

As you know, we’re big fans of Designed By Lily. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
I am an Interior Designer specializing in high-end residential work and the functionality of your home. I am most proud of the time and thought I put into each and every project, no matter the scale.

I offer residential services ranging from organization all the way to full renovations, including consultations, spacing planning, and 3D renderings.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Take it one day at a time, it’s not going to happen overnight and don’t forget its okay to take breaks and time off. Ask so many questions of those who are more experienced. They are happy to help.

I wish I knew that no matter that, even on the days when I wasn’t as productive as I could’ve been, I still put in 100% of what I had that day, and that’s okay. Not every day is going to be amazing.
