Exploring Life & Business with Lindsey Woodard of La Bella

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Woodard.

Hi Lindsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My interest in the beauty industry started at a young age. While making my plans after high school, it was important to me to travel, explore, and ensure that beauty school was the right choice. Beauty School options were sparse at the time, so I settled on an affordable school with a high State Board passing rate. Madison University of Beauty had been in operation for a long time when I began my beauty school journey. I started part-time, so I could continue to work a full-time job. When I introduced the option to take over ownership of La Bella, I still had a year of schooling or about 900 hours to complete. La Bella had been in operation only a few months when the owners decided to sell the business. I was 21 at the time, with all the ambition, energy, and determination of a young woman starting a new career path. I had a couple of years of experience as a shift supervisor manager, restaurant serving experience, and some retail experience from my high school jobs. With my parent’s support, I moved forward to take over ownership of La Bella in July of 2006. There were many bumps in the first few years. I was in school full time, working part-time, and attempting to run a salon. I lost all of my staff in the first 3 months of ownership. I hired a friend from my beauty school to work at the salon while I was putting in as many hours as I could at school. I was young and determined! I joined the chamber of commerce, did a quick refreshing of paint at the salon, and hosted a grand reopening just a month after I passed my State Board exams. It was exciting and slow at the salon.

The clients of La Bella have been loyal and amazing over the years. I continued my part-time job for 5 years while I paid off my debts and put every penny I made at the salon back into it. Before social media, I passed out as many business cards as possible and did all my coworker’s hair at my part-time coffee shop job. My staff grew slowly, and La Bella became an uplifting, comfortable environment I had dreamed of. Today, La Bella is celebrating 16 years of business! I have a lovely salon family of 6 stylists. I am extremely grateful and fortunate to see La Bella become what it is today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?

I have found that the hardest thing in the salon environment is staffing changes. Changing the salon dynamic is just hard if a stylist moves on to a different salon or goes in a different direction. We all work very closely together. Every win and every miss, we navigate them together as a team similar to that of a family. That is why we call each other a salon family. I also find that juggling the business side of things with the creative side of hairdressing is a challenge. It’s like constantly switching to a different side of my brain. There are weeks and months that I am doing a great job juggling it all, and others where I am so far behind that I feel overwhelmed.

Then there are social media. When I started doing hair and running a salon, there was no need for social media to grow my business. I have had to learn a lot and work to stay relevant. I’m thankful to my younger stylists who school me on the art of social media. I would say that there are daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly challenges and obstacles that come up in running my salon. I do find that with every challenge, there is an opportunity to learn and grow. I am grateful for the challenges along the way. Without the hard times, it is impossible to appreciate the successful moments.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Hendersonville. I was born at Hendersonville Hospital and raised here. I am proud to live, own a business, and raise my children in this beautiful city full of wonderful people. I am grateful to see so many new faces in Hendersonville. As a native, it has been hard to quickly see so much change happen. I would love to see the historic parts of Hendersonville get the attention and celebration it deserves. Sidewalks and street lights!
