Today we’d like to introduce you to M.j. Garrett
Hi M.J., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Proud to say that I was born and raised here in Nashville, Tennessee. Went to junior high and high school at Donaldson Christian Academy, and then had the opportunity to play football at Vanderbilt University. My major in college was human and organizational development and was a three-year starter for the commodores. After graduating, I was not able to take my skills to the NFL, so I went through the process of trying to find out who I really was. I always been an athlete and my goal was to play on the next level and when that didn’t work out, it was the first time of my life. I truly had to find myself . Got a job doing marketing at a nonprofit in Nashville, but soon after decided to move to California with a buddy of mine who had a few small rolls and a cheesy soap opera. My first three weeks of living in California I was literally at the right place at the right time and met casting Director For MTV. Next thing I knew, I was cast to be on the hit reality show the real world. After finishing the show, I will soon thrust into the world of public speaking where I traveled around the country speaking to college students about my experience on the show and how it can be applied to their college experience. During this time, I was also filming other shows for MTV called the challenge . After having my first daughter, I had decided it was time to get a real job, no pun intended my first real job was with a staffing company here in Nashville, where I got my first taste of sales. Worst job ever! I did learn a lot about sales and what I liked and disliked about it and from there begin honing my skills . I traded in the suit and tie to go work in the blue collar field of roofing sales. I’ve been in the industry for over 14 years and I’m currently the sales and marketing director at Austermiller roofing. MTV steel reaches out to film shows and I actually came back and film two shows for them in my early 40s and won
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It is definitely not been a smooth road. The hardest part of my career was trying to figure out who I truly was and how I can add value in the workforce. Though I’m a natural at sales, but I had to believe in the product. That’s what I love about the roofing industry. Literally every person that you meet every day is a potential customer and roof is something that you can’t live without.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Austermiller roofing is a locally female owned and operated company that has been in business for over 30+ years. Our company is unique because we provide three different service offerings; new construction, roofing, retail and insurance remodels and commercial. Most companies focus simply on one of those verticals. at Austermiller we know that there’s more that goes into a roofing project other than installing a new roof, it’s all about the customers experience from start to finish. We provide unmatched customer service and deliver a top-notch product all while alleviating the headache of getting a roof replaced on the customers property . We recently partnered with the national predators and are currently putting a lot of our focus on the community and charity work.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Having a mentor is crucial. We only know what we know and have only experienced what we’ve experienced. A mentor can help you look at your profession through a different lens and can provide you with solutions to problems you have never encountered before. It’s simply how we grow and it’s always great to have a good sounding board. As mentioned before, and the roofing industry almost every person you meet on a daily basis will at some point have the need for your service. It’s not that you have to hard sell them, rather plant a seed in their head for whenever it’s time to replace their roof and become that trusted advisor in order to you definitely have to put yourself out there and constantly think about your profession .
