Exploring Life & Business with Makayla Nash of Drip Drive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Nash

Hi Makayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In my work as a restorative practice’s assistant of Metro Nashville Public
Schools for middle schools, I work with families who are suffering from homeless, poverty, low-income, and single parent households. As you might imagine, covering the basic
needs for many is a struggle and buying well-made, name brand clothing is
typically not a possibility for these families.
As I began to form connections with the students at the school, I soon
learned that a majority of our student’s absences and behavior incidents
stemmed from them not feeling confident in the clothing that they were
wearing. Coming from similar backgrounds as the children I currently serve, I
am familiar with the mental health and feelings of a child who is without.
However, now I am in the position to give back.
It didn’t take much to imagine what a difference it would make for students to
be able to wear clothes — known as “drip” to young people — that would
make them feel comfortable and boost their self-esteem. The idea of a name
brand clothing drive started to take shape, and so the “Drip Drive” was born!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles is getting the paperwork logistics in order, not knowing where to start in the beginning when it came to forming it into an actual nonprofit organization. A lot of people are not sure where to begin, as I was as well. It took me surrounding myself with those who have successful nonprofits and who know the logistics.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Drip Drive?
DRIP DRIVE, a nonprofit organization founded in 2022, aims to empower students through fashion by providing
a unique clothing drive experience. This initiative transforms school gymnasiums into temporary shopping
malls, offering students the opportunity to select outfits from name brands and high-end fashion designers.

One significant factor that separates our nonprofit from others is the quality of clothing given away. During Drip Drive events, children go through with a shopping experience of a lifetime are able to able to walk away with the clothing brands of their dreams, including Nike, Jordan, Gucci, Dior, Rhude, Palm Angels, etc.

Our objective is to improve student’s attendance, behavior, and raise self-esteem by providing them with resources that boost students’ confidence.

How do you define success?
success is having a vision/dream, planning out goals, and accomplishing those goals and visions you set for yourself
