Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora Healy.
Hi Nora, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During my time studying Journalism, I created a fashion blog. Part required school project, part home for my more off-the-wall creative ideas to live in while I made my way through a rigorous curriculum of technical writing. This blog was, as I always pitched it, “an outfit based on an album cover”.
To build a look, I’d start with the album cover: a visual representation of a collection of music. Then, I’d choose one track to hone in on. I’d dissect all the lyrics to find the line with the most impact, and then create an entire world around that feeling. Who was experiencing this song? Where were they? What were they looking at, what street were they walking down, what were they thinking about? What shoes were they wearing? It was poetry and fashion and music and sound combined, and it was immersive.
What started as a place to organize creative thoughts eventually turned into a business idea. I saw a gap in the market that I wanted to fill: merch that reflected the artistry and aesthetic of the musical artist; merch that communicated what the artist was saying, and how they were saying it. I knew I could build a service that served as a conduit between audible projects and merch as a visual medium.
Where Honeybaby comes into play is as the fashion expert for the music artist. Our services help to identify and define the right brand and style associations for music artist based on their art and audiences.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I didn’t know where I would land in the fashion industry, but I knew it had to be around the minds who were creating it. I knew I wasn’t a musician, but I did know my love of fashion and my fascination with live music were bound to meet somewhere in the middle someday.
In college, I pursued a degree in Journalism, knowing fashion would be what I wrote about. My hard skills have always been storytelling and world-building. Organically, I found my way into marketing for fashion brands, communicating a brand story to the consumers brands need to reach.
Through many years of working in marketing, I learned where my sweet spot was and what Honeybaby needed to be. But the road was not always smooth.
I have often been working full-time roles while putting in late-night hours for fashion clients on the side. I applied the concept and business plan for Honeybaby to a fashion entrepreneurship grad program. Being accepted into that program and having the chance to work alongside like-minded entrepreneurs in Amsterdam was one of my longest-standing dreams come true.
I had to defer my enrollment due to financial constraints and worked to save enough for the program by 2020. Unfortunately, the program ended as schools went online during the COVID-19 crisis and I was never able to attend.
We’ve been impressed with Honeybaby, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
