Exploring Life & Business with Robert Young of Covert Results

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Young.

Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee watching my late father conduct investigations as a federal police officer with the railroad. He had a cool job, and I wanted to do the same thing! Once I got past becoming an Atlanta Braves baseball player, I chose the path of law enforcement. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) I entered into the Metro Nashville Police academy in 2007. After 6 months of training, I earned the Top Gun award, and hit the streets. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, I just had to work hard to get there. In five short years I had made it; my dream job on the 20th Judicial District Drug Task Force. The cases this small unit of 6 was able to produce were unimaginable, something straight out of a movie. In 2014 I started a cocaine trafficking case. Little did I know that it would lead to the largest cocaine haul and most complex wiretap case in Nashville history. These were the most emotional times in my life; the ups and downs I documented in a true-crime thriller “The Good Line.” Bit.ly/thegoodline Soon after the record case, our unit was awarded with the announcement of being dismantled. Going from complex wiretap cases to patrol was not fun. The 28-year-old unit gone, vanished, and barely any media coverage. Nashville citizens left vulnerable, all while crime skyrocketed. Undoubtedly, I loved the job and stayed on course. I had something to prove and wanted to work my way back to the countywide narcotics unit, a step below the old 20th. Nearly two years of hard work and I did just that. I went through the death of my dad all while working my tail off, being mandated to work various uniformed assignments, and subtracting my overtime pay due to bereavement. I was salty. I did make it back to the countywide unit, but it just wasn’t the same. Then after an ACL tear and surgery, I was back on desk duty. As if it couldn’t get much worse, the supervisor of our 10-man team was arrested for stealing. Wow! Back to patrol (again), they said, which made no sense. Why punish the officers when it was the supervisor that was a criminal? Regardless, the decision was made and this team was dismantled. Sound familiar? Well, I had enough! With more than a decade in law enforcement, it was time to retire and start a new venture. It’s not easy leaving a government job, but I was willing to give it a shot. With constant encouragement from friends and family, in March 2018, I founded Covert Results, LLC https://www.covertresults.com/ a private investigations and security company in Tennessee. Four years in and I haven’t looked back. Covert Results has doubled in size each year, now having more than 10 licensed investigators and access to more than 100 armed officers, and it continues to grow. Recently we were accepted into the Entrepreneurs Organization due to our success and dedication to the industry. What a journey. From dope cop to entrepreneurship, nothing is easy. With hard work, consistency, making good relationships, and surrounding yourself by good positive people has definitely paid off. I must thank my amazing lawyer wife and all of my family, as well as an expert team of investigators and security professionals for all of the support. Earlier this year, in mid-2021, we launched Operation Rose https://operationrose.org/ Our mission is to educate and create actionable solutions to preventing and combatting human trafficking in Tennessee. In all my spare time I enjoy spending time with friends and family and loving my two-year-old little girl. Thus far the journey has been amazing and I can’t wait to see Covert Results and Operation Rose 10 years from now. Just not too fast!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth! Ha! Hard work is not easy and there have been bumps in the road. The struggles include:

-completing the police academy
-politics within policing
-ups and downs of the most successful wiretap case, but dealing with the downfall of the unit
-politics
-the death of my dad
-proving my worth to the government
-politics
-leaving government work
-entrepreneurship
-running a business
-starting a nonprofit
