Hi Sam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into entrepreneurship began in college, where I met my business partner in an introductory business class. We became friends and decided to start our first business together when we were just 22. Since then, we’ve launched several ventures, learning valuable lessons along the way.
In 2021, during the pandemic, I realized how difficult it was to keep fit with gyms closed and personal trainers being too expensive. That’s when I came up with the idea for HipTrain. I wanted to make personal training affordable and accessible to everyone, no matter where they are.
We developed an app that connects people with trainers worldwide, allowing for personalized training sessions via video. This makes it more affordable and flexible, letting people fit workouts into their schedules and train from any location. Since launching, we’ve completed nearly 100,000 live sessions, helping many achieve their fitness goals without the high costs.
Personally, HipTrain has been a game-changer for me; I’ve lost 35 pounds and embraced a healthier lifestyle. My focus is on making fitness a convenient part of everyday life. Throughout my business journey, I’ve learned that building a strong, sustainable business is more crucial than just aiming for a quick sale.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and growing HipTrain definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any other venture, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was figuring out how to use technology effectively to deliver personal training sessions remotely while maintaining high quality. Ensuring the technology was user-friendly and reliable took a lot of testing and adjustments.
Another struggle was getting the word out and building trust with potential clients. Personal training is traditionally a face-to-face service, so convincing people to try this new model required significant effort in terms of marketing and education.
We also had to navigate the typical challenges of running a business, like managing cash flow and scaling our team as we grew. Balancing affordability for clients while ensuring fair compensation for our trainers was critical and required careful planning.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle taught us valuable lessons and ultimately made HipTrain stronger. We’re constantly learning and adapting to better serve our users and meet their needs.

I couldn’t have succeeded without the amazing support from my family. My wife and daughters have been my biggest cheerleaders, always encouraging me and even enjoying HipTrain classes themselves.
My business partner, who I’ve worked with since college, has been essential in building HipTrain. We share a vision and drive that keeps us moving forward.
I’ve also had great mentors and supporters who have guided me, and our clients whose feedback keeps us improving. Plus, the fantastic team at HipTrain—from trainers to tech staff—have all worked hard to make our success possible.
