Exploring Life & Business with Sarah Herrmann of Southern Serenity Dental Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Herrmann.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in agriculture in Southwest Wisconsin. My father raised sheep and cattle. My parents never went to college or supported higher education. I met my husband in New Mexico on a cattle ranch that my father was managing. Later we married and tried ranching and farming but knew that road would not work out. During that time though, more than 20 years ago, I became a dental assistant and that is where my passion for dentistry was sparked. I worked as a dental assistant on and off while being a wife, mother and going to college.

Being a first-generation college student from rural Wisconsin, a wife, and a mother of two children, made the journey to becoming a dentist a challenge. However, I made it through with strength, flexibility, patience, vision and grace. I earned my Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biochemistry, built and managed a large agricultural lab for soil, plant, and water testing then completed Graduate Coursework in Microbiology at UW-Madison prior to earning my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

I have worked in a variety of dental environments. Many give me flashbacks of running hundreds of cattle through a chute in hours or shearing sheep at rapid rates… I was being encouraged to compromise patient care for profit beyond means, which I refused, and still refuse to do. This led to my calling to create a space that facilitates a truly new relaxing dental experience with excellent patient care and education. Southern Serenity Dental Spa (SS-DS) in Brentwood, Tennessee, was built to facilitate my vision. The design is Southwestern, and I have heard numerous times that SS-DS is the most beautiful dental office ever seen. SS-DS feels more like a high-end luxury Spa – a calm tranquil dental spa in which you can receive dental care along with massage therapy and skincare. I am passionate about providing quality ethical necessary dental care to patients in a novel relaxing environment. Patients will feel the difference the moment they walk through the front door.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road was more of a rocky path over mountains, but looking back at the views, brings a smile… As a first-generation college student from a rural area: 1) I had very little support navigating the higher education system; 2) My parents, nor my husband’s parents, supported us financially and they were not close enough to help with our children; and 3) I had to work relatively harder in my studies compared to the other students who were educated in highly rated public or private schools. Along the way, I had several deaths in the family, including the deaths of my father, in a farming accident and two young nephews. In addition, my husband was going into End-Stage Kidney Failure. No good path is easy.

As you know, we’re big fans of Southern Serenity Dental Spa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a passionate general dentist, and I provide the highest quality care and education to my patients. I have my schedule set up to maximize my time with each patient in order to provide exceptional service, education, and dental treatment to every person I see. You will feel the difference the moment you walk into Southern Serenity Dental Spa.

How do you define success?
Success for me is to be able to go sleep at night knowing that I provided quality, honest, ethical dental care to each patient I’ve seen.
