Dr. Abrams shares his story with us below
In April 2020, Sean J. Abrams, DDS purchased Dr. Burcham’s dental practice.
With Dr. Burcham’s nearing retirement date and after moving to Franklin from the Chicago area in June 2020, Dr. Abrams officially took over the daily running of the practice as well as overseeing patient care. After Dr. Burcham’s official last day, Dr. Abrams rebranded the office to Downtown Franklin Family Dentistry. Dr. Abrams is proud to continue on Dr. Burcham’s legacy as Downtown Franklin’s Family Dentist.
A native of the Chicagoland area, Dr. Abrams was very excited to move to Franklin. His path to dentistry started at the University of Illinois where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science. He later went on to earn a certification in dental lab technology and in 2006, Dr. Abrams received a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Immediately following dental school graduation, he joined Beloit Area Community Health Center in Beloit, WI where he practiced general dentistry treating underserved patients.
In 2008, Dr. Abrams began caring for patients at a busy family practice in Palatine, IL. In 2013, he then looked for an opportunity to run his own practice and joined the team at Village Smiles, in Elk Grove Village, IL.
Valuing patient relationships is a top priority for Dr. Abrams. He enjoys working with patients of all ages and strongly believes that good patient education is the key to a healthy smile. His goal for each and every patient is to provide the most comprehensive and individualized care possible and to address patient dental needs with the best long-term outcome in mind.
Dr. Abrams has been a long-time member of the American Dental Association, local dental societies, and study clubs. He attends continuing education programs including the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne, FL.
On a personal note, Dr. Abrams is an advocate for greyhound adoption and enjoys watching sports and movies and spending time with his wife, daughter, and son. He is proud to work and live in Franklin!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest struggles in owning and operating a dental practice over the past two years has been the spread of Covid. Every time there has been an increase in cases, our office has seen an increase in patient appointment cancellations as well.
Another struggle has been implementing the right systems and successfully getting “buy-in” from employees on bringing on/accepting new ways of doing things with these systems.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
DFFD is a family practice dental office. We are a family-owned practice and serve children through seniors. Our practice is located in historic downtown Franklin in a cozy, craftsman-style home. With time-period features such as a front porch and fireplaces, patients of all ages feel at home in our “home” and with our team. We offer modern, state-of-the-art equipment allowing us to provide the highest level of care.
Dr. Abrams’ approach is to treat patients by not just focusing on the mouth but to take into consideration all body systems, medical history, and other systemic problems. All patients complete a thorough medical history and have blood pressure checked at each visit. Dr. Abrams takes time with patients to explain how oral health can affect the body and how other body conditions can also impact oral health. Dr. Abrams has an extensive background in restoration and has a passion for restoring teeth and smiles.
At DFFD, we pride ourselves on customer service and having a consistent patient focused approach from the moment patients enter our “home” until the next appointment is scheduled when they leave. We want every patient to know we care about them as an individual, not just a patient.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
We really don’t believe in good or back luck, but feel instead that it’s all about what you make out of a situation.
Yes, starting this practice during the height of Covid had its challenges. Still, we believe that this made us pivot and react positively by updating our policies and procedures and pushing us to think through best practices for reaching our five and ten-year goals.
Going through challenges only builds you up and makes you more resilient for the next challenge (or in this case, a global pandemic!).
