I was born and raised in Cuba, a country rich in culture, music, and history. Growing up, I was surrounded by vibrant traditions, from salsa rhythms to the stories of resilience within my community. My early years instilled in me a deep appreciation for storytelling, travel, and the power of human connection. Despite the challenges of living in a country with limited freedoms, I found joy in the arts, especially in dance, music, and journalism, which would later shape my career.

In 2000, I made one of the most significant and most life-changing decisions of my life: I immigrated to the United States. Leaving Cuba was both thrilling and challenging. I arrived in a new country, navigating a different language, culture, and way of life. But I was determined to succeed. I worked tirelessly to build a future for myself, never losing sight of my love for storytelling and travel. 2005 I proudly became a U.S. citizen, marking a pivotal moment in my journey.

My career in media flourished as I became deeply involved in journalism and broadcasting. I had the incredible opportunity to travel with President Barack Obama to Cuba in 2016 as part of the White House Press Corps, a historic moment that reinforced my commitment to storytelling and bridging cultures. I also worked on various media projects, including film production, earning recognition as a leading media personality in the Latino community in Tennessee. My dedication to sharing untold stories led to my recognition as a ‘Beacon of Light’ award recipient in 2019.

Entrepreneurship & the Birth of Sheyla Adventure Travel

My love for travel and cultural connections led me to launch my travel agency. I wanted to create experiences that allowed people to explore the world authentically, especially in destinations like Cuba, Latin America, and the Caribbean. I became a certified travel advisor, specializing in luxury, adventure, and cultural travel. Through my agency, I help travelers immerse themselves in the beauty of different cultures, music, and traditions while supporting local communities.

Today, my journey has come full circle. I serve on the board of the Nashville Jazz Workshop, blending my love for music and culture with community engagement. I continue to build a legacy through travel, media, and storytelling, helping others experience the world meaningfully. Every step of my journey—from my childhood in Cuba to becoming an entrepreneur and media professional—has shaped the person I am today. My goal is to inspire others to embrace adventure, cultural exploration, and the power of human connection.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Challenges are inevitable, but they are also opportunities. Every time I faced setbacks—whether it was the loss of income due to policy changes, the impact of COVID-19, or the challenge of rebranding—I saw them as moments to learn, adapt, and grow. Rather than dwelling on what was lost, I focused on what I could create next.

The biggest lesson? Always be grateful and embrace every experience, good or bad. Mistakes and failures are not obstacles; they are stepping stones that teach you valuable lessons. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My journey has been a testament to perseverance, optimism, and the power of reinvention, and I hope my story inspires others to keep moving forward—no matter the challenges they face.
