Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Ayala.
Hi Steve, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Dog Who Brought Me Back to Myself
*By Steve Ayala*
Over the past few years, I’ve worked with many dogs that are still feeling the effects of the pandemic. During that time, a lot of them missed the early socialization and structure that help them feel comfortable and confident in the world.
Now that life has opened back up, many people want to include their dogs in everything—hikes, parks, outdoor restaurants, and weekend adventures. But for some dogs, those environments can still feel overwhelming.
When I see a dog pulling on the leash, barking, or shutting down in a new environment, I don’t see a “bad dog.” I see a dog that simply hasn’t been shown how to navigate the world with confidence yet.
Helping dogs develop that confidence and helping owners understand the role they play in that process is what drives my work as a trainer.
I grew up in the Almaden area of San Jose, where dogs were always a part of my life. My parents have owned Imelda’s Pet Grooming for more than 30 years, and many of my summers were spent helping at the shop. Being surrounded by so many dogs at a young age taught me something early on: every dog has its own personality, its own fears, and its own strengths.
Later, I earned a marketing degree and began a career in the tech industry. On paper, everything looked like the right path but something always felt like it was missing.
That changed when I adopted my dog, Rocko. He’s a Beagle and Australian Shepherd mix with a big personality, but he also struggled with anxiety and reactivity. Working through those challenges together reminded me just how powerful the relationship between a dog and their owner can be.
Watching him grow in confidence brought me back to something I had always loved working with dogs.
Eventually, I made the decision to leave my tech career and pursue dog training full time.
Since then, I’ve worked with all kinds of dogs from powerful, driven breeds like Dobermans, Pit Bulls, and German Shepherds to more sensitive dogs that simply need the right structure and guidance to feel secure.
What I’ve learned is that a dog’s heart is never defined by its size, breed, or even its struggles. With clear communication, patience, and the right leadership, dogs can become calm, balanced companions who are ready to be part of their owner’s everyday life.
Today, my work focuses on helping dogs build that kind of confidence and helping owners understand how much their guidance matters. When dogs are given structure and support, the world starts to feel less overwhelming. Walks become calmer, new environments feel manageable, and the bond between dog and owner grows stronger.
Confidence changes everything for a dog and watching that transformation is what keeps me passionate about this work every day
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Growing up in Almaden, San Jose, I spent a lot of time around dogs helping at my family’s business, Imelda’s Pet Grooming. A few years ago, a fire hit the business, which was a major setback for our family and showed me how quickly things can change.
Almaden has its nicer side, but there’s also another side that not everyone sees. Growing up around both showed me early that people can take very different paths in life. Many of the friends around me didn’t have clear goals or direction, and seeing that made me realize I had to decide for myself where I wanted to go.
No one was going to come tap me on the shoulder and guide the way. I had to believe in myself and choose a different path. It wasn’t easy, but life moves fast. There isn’t much time to sit around feeling sorry for yourself you have to keep moving forward and keep pushing through challenges. Those experiences helped shape the mindset I carry today in life and in my work with dogs
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about AyalaK9DogTraining?
Dogs aren’t just pets; they’re family. They show up to love us, heal us, and sometimes fill the spaces left by someone we’ve lost. Every moment with them matters, and every day counts.
I don’t train dogs to be military‑style robots. I train dogs to enjoy life to go on pack walks, chase squirrels, get muddy, and just be dogs. My mission is to eventually have local land where I can raise and nurture future pups, giving them the best start in life. Nobody knows how much time we have, so engage today while you can, run today while you can, and do what you can with your pup, because tomorrow is never promised.
