Tim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was approaching my retirement from the Air Force Reserve and commuting 100 miles each way to a civil service job I didn’t love – then my Mom, my biggest fan, died. I knew I needed to do something different. I’ve always considered starting my own business but the time or opportunity never seemed to be right. Additionally, I wanted to continue to serve but didn’t know in what capacity. That’s when Assisted Living Locators was brought to my attention; I knew immediately it was what I was meant to do. I was actually going to be able to help others whose loved ones were facing the same difficult situation my family faced – it was the perfect fit. Owning a senior living placement service allows me to make a good living while helping others; what more could anyone ask from their professional life?

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening any business is difficult. Opening one in which access to nursing homes, assisted living communities, and hospitals is essential during a pandemic has seemed, at times, to be impossible. The doors we needed to open were literally closed. This endeavor would have truly been impossible without patience, hope, faith, and the encouragement of family and friends. The senior care industry is made up of very welcoming and cooperative professionals, and they’ve helped and taught me a great deal. Income has been slow to come, but we’ve been building our brand for the past nine months and we are just now starting to reap the benefits of those efforts. For the past few months each week is busier than the last, which provides me great confidence that the worst is behind us. Running this company will never be easy, but as business grows and we help more people, it will become even more fulfilling.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was in elementary school, my family would travel from our home in a small city in Nebraska to a lake in rural Minnesota. We slept in an old rustic cabin with few creature comforts. The hot summer days we’d spend in our boat either skiing or fishing. During the cool nights, we’d hang out at the little store, sit in the sauna until the adults would kick us out, or lie on the dock looking up at the billions of stars you could see so far from any city. Although the accommodations were certainly pretty rough, we didn’t notice. We were with family, and we just had fun.
