Exploring Life & Business with TJ Milam of Premier Strength TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ Milam

Hi TJ, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After I graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2001 with a degree in Broadcasting, I began working in the film industry here in Nashville on music videos, TV shows, and a few independent films.

In 2004. I moved out to Los Angeles, where I worked at a movie trailer house until 2007. While I was in Los Angeles I fell back in love with strength training and fitness and even competed in a Muscle Beach competition, which I never thought in my life I would ever do!

So in the fall of 2007, I decided to move back home to Nashville and start my new career in the fitness business as a personal trainer. I started working at a large corporate gym in October 2007 and became certified through the American Council on Exercise and then in 2008 began training clients. I stayed there for a little over a year, but the large corporate world wasn’t really for me. Then in April 2009 I began working as an independent contractor for a smaller personal training studio in downtown Nashville, where I learned how to train clients with the utmost efficiency and effectiveness using slower, more controlled movements during each exercise, and this was the perfect modality for the type of clients we were working with, which were mainly people with law firms and large banks.

Then in 2011 I received an incredible opportunity through one of the law firms to take my talents into the Pinnacle at Symphony Place on 3rd Avenue, and that has been a blessing that I can really barely put into words! And I really have to give so much credit to the law firms and Pinnacle Bank for being some of the very best people I could’ve ever worked with, and simply would not have the life that I have today without them!

Now the next chapter in my career will begin this coming May when I open my own personal training studio in the Hillsboro Hobbs building in Green Hills with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, and an even higher level of client experience and service. What I think will be most attractive to everyone is that it is much more private 1 on 1 training without the hustle and bustle of a public gym atmosphere.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In May of 2024 I had my prostate removed due to discovering a small amount of prostate cancer two months prior. It was an incredibly humbling experience, and I am just incredibly grateful to God to be alive, to be healthy, and to continue my purpose in this life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I just recently changed the name of my website to PremierStrengthTN.com and will continue to be making updates before opening the new location in Green Hills.

What separates my style of exercise from others is the level of intensity that can be reached in any given exercise without causing any damage or pain to the joint attachments. Proper form, proper breathing & safety are top priority for every client. The results show up quickly and clients enjoy being consistent with the training because workout sessions only last a maximum of 30 minutes and it is only required to complete 1 to 2 workouts per week. The rest and recovery are just as important and effective as the workout sessions.

This specific modality has kept clients coming back year after year since 2009, and I wouldn’t dare change the principles that keeps delivering the results they’re after!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
High Intensity Business podcast & YouTube channel by Lawrence Neal has been an incredibly valuable resource for me. I’m also a member of his group where all of us like-minded exercise business owners can share ideas and learn what really works for our type of practice and what doesn’t.

I’ve always enjoyed any self-help / mindset podcast or YouTube channel as well that can help be just a little bit better every day, such as Lewis Howes or Mel Robbins.
