Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Dennis
Hi Abby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to becoming an esthetician started in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. I was in college, but I quickly realized that the traditional path wasn’t for me. The experience felt disconnected, and I knew there had to be something more fulfilling out there. After taking some time to reflect, I realized I wanted to pursue something that would allow me to help others in a meaningful way. Growing up, I struggled with severe acne and rosacea, so I truly understood how challenging it can be to feel confident in your own skin. That’s when I started looking into esthetician schools. I knew I wanted to become someone who could help others feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin, just like I wish I had felt when I was younger. It became my passion to not only address skin concerns but also to empower people to embrace their natural beauty.
When I graduated Esthetician school, my Esthetician, Kristen Jones, actually just opened up her own shop (Skin Design & Suites) and wanted to know if I’d like to work with her. The timing was perfect and so was this opportunity.
Now, today, I’ve been working for 3 years and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an esthetician, building a client base was definitely a challenge at first. It’s not an easy path, and I quickly learned how crucial it is to market myself effectively. It’s not just about being skilled at what you do, but also about creating visibility for your work. Word-of-mouth has been incredibly important in this industry—once clients experience your services and are satisfied, they’re more likely to refer others. So, I had to be proactive, putting myself out there and making sure people knew what I had to offer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Skin Design & Suites ?
In my role as an esthetician, I offer a variety of services including facials, chemical peels, lash lifts and tints, waxing, and teeth whitening. While these treatments are important, what truly sets me apart is the personal connection I build with each client. I believe that self-care is about more than just the treatments themselves—it’s about making people feel good about who they are. My priority is to create an environment where my clients feel comfortable, valued, and confident. What distinguishes me from other estheticians is the genuine care I put into understanding each client’s needs and tailoring treatments to not only enhance their appearance but to uplift their self-esteem. For me, it’s not just about the service; it’s about making sure my clients leave feeling their best, both inside and out.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One key lesson I took away from the Covid-19 crisis is how quickly things can change, sometimes unexpectedly. It really put into perspective how fragile your job can be. Fortunately, in my industry, we didn’t see as much of a dramatic shift. During those challenging times, people really prioritized self-care, and I think that contributed to a steady demand for the services we provide. It was a reminder of the value in being adaptable and how certain needs, like self-care, remain essential even in difficult circumstances.
