Hidden Gems: Meet Adam Lee of 28:Tenn Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Lee.

Hi Adam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Physical activity, training, and fitness have been a passion and guiding light in my life since the age of 18 when I attended basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. It was there that I saw firsthand the effects that purposeful exercise could have on one’s body and mind as I grew stronger in both.

I turned my interest in personal fitness into a bachelor’s degree with the intention of introducing others to the power of purposeful exercise (and supportive nutrition).

Before establishing my practice four years ago, and opening our fitness center nearly a year ago, I gained valuable knowledge and first-hand experience working for multiple gyms and personal training companies for over two decades.

Ultimately, I decided to take a leap of faith and open 28:Tenn Fitness because I wanted to leverage my time better, become more profitable, and impact more people, all things I was finding difficult to do while working for others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road.

Being passionate about what I do and how well I do it has had SOME bearing on my success as a business owner, but it’s far less than I’d like it to. I do believe that great coaching is still the best marketing tool in the digital age, but getting people in the door to experience what it is I do has been a struggle.

On any given day, I could wear as many as eight different “hats”, many of which I don’t [presently] wear well.

Learning the skills necessary to do so many “hats” has been a struggle. Even learning how to create the space to learn these skills has been a struggle.

As you know, we’re big fans of 28:Tenn Fitness, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
In the past, one-on-one personal training and small and large group training was generally the format I followed.

With my newfound freedom, I wanted to do semi-private personal training, which provides the best of both worlds.

With semi-private personal training, you still get a personalized experience with programming catered to your goals, needs, and abilities, along with healthy competition, support, and the energy you expect from a group class. Additionally, semi-private personal training ensures the shared investment of the coach, making working with a fitness and nutrition professional more accessible for an increased number of people.

The single most enjoyable part of my work is my interactions with clients. Whether coaching “on the floor” or in conversation, helping a client overcome obstacles or to have an aha moment is exhilarating.

As an individual, I’m committed to excellence, integrity, and making a difference. I want to better my family, clients, and community. I’m also responsible for that which I’ve been given—my family, clients, and community—and accountable to the One from whom it came.

Implementing all I know and turning my passion for fitness into a thriving, growing business has indeed given me immense satisfaction over the years.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Being a great technician doesn’t guarantee you’ll be a great business owner.

If someone wants to build a better body, I recommend they hire a coach. If someone wants to build a business, I recommend they hire a coach. You don’t know what you don’t know. Granted, you can learn by doing [it alone], but why?

One thing I wish I knew when starting would’ve been to know how to better negotiate a commercial lease, or at least know how to ask better questions.
