Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Tallman.
Hi Allison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My passion for nutrition started in college. I enjoyed how it incorporated so many aspects – clinical, culinary, community, etc, and there are so many ways you can go with it! I was learning that food not only connects us to others but it can also be healing. Fast forward from there, I got my Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition and built a foundation for my nutrition knowledge. This gave me the opportunity to learn about chronic diseases, how to prevent them, and about our healthcare system.
Moving to Nashville for my husband’s job, I saw a need for a nutrition business in this area that focused on real, whole foods (and not fad diets/supplements,) and that can help others to build a healthy relationship with food. I also noticed that people commonly stress over food and are confused on what to eat for their body, so it became my mission to help others to decrease that confusion, feel more confident in their eating habits, and learn that food and nutrition can be fun!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ll be honest – running your own business is NOT a smooth road. I think if it’s a smooth road that you’re not doing something right because running your own business should be a challenge! While I feel that I am an expert in nutrition, starting and owning a business is something I constantly struggle with. You have to learn marketing.. advertising.. you have to get an accountant and a lawyer. All new things! There’s also ALWAYS something more that you can do for your business. You can work endless nights and be on social media all of the time. I struggle to give myself the barrier to separate my work/life. Work life balance is very important to me.
That being said, I love a good challenge and am motivated by achievements, so all of the hard work pays off. 🙂
We’ve been impressed with Nourished Routes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nourished Routes is a local nutrition consulting company led by 2 registered dietitians. We specialize in general wellness, intuitive eating, and helping individuals to build a healthy relationship with food, We help our clients and community to better understand what to eat to nourish and fuel their body – whether they currently have a condition or if they are wanting to prevent one.
What sets us apart from others is that we are individualized – everything that we do for our clients is completely customized and we are not a ‘one size fits all’ model. We build relationships with our clients and with our community. We know that finding accurate and reliable nutrition information is hard, so we hope that individuals will come to us with their nutrition questions over googling!
Lastly, we hope interactive events to make nutrition fun and exciting. These events include webinars, cooking classes, etc, and can all be found on our website.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say in general, myself and my business partner are not huge risk takers. We view our business as our baby (because we built it from the ground up!), and therefore taking risks can be daunting for us. We do make decisions each and every day that we are nervous about, though. For example, if we are paying to advertise something, or we are offering something new, we are not sure how it’s going to go. Running your own business is and continues to be trial and error.
