Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Clemens.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before starting my own business, I was a kindergarten teacher and instructional leader in Brooklyn for almost five years. My boyfriend, Joe, and I were both working a lot and it started to take a toll on our health and happiness. So in a leap of faith, we decided to move from New York and start a new chapter. (If not now, when, right?) It felt like the perfect time to pursue my other passions – fitness and nutrition – and see if I could successfully combine my love for teaching with the world of fitness. I began the certification process and adjusting to life as a solopreneur, learning a lot of new skills (and a lot about myself) along the way. I feel extremely grateful that four years and hundreds of clients later, I now get to help women get fit and healthy – as my job!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. I knew nothing about how to start and run a business, so every step along the way was a challenge and learning curve. Lots of trial and error learning to build systems, how to market myself, manage the financial and accounting side of things while also serving my clients. It’s really humbling to go from a safe and solid income to freeballing on your own, wondering what the next month will look like. I remember thinking at one point there was no way I’d ever be able to support myself because it all felt so overwhelming, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. I focused all my time on giving my clients the best possible experience while simultaneously diving into everything I could to learn fast – books, courses, a mentor, communities, etc.
We’ve been impressed with Ashley Khristine Fitness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a certified trainer and nutritionist and I specialize in weightlifting and macro nutrition. I coach both in-person and online. I love working with women new to weightlifting to help them build strength and confidence. It’s the most rewarding process! I also work with many women who want to lose fat and build muscle to optimize their physique in a healthy way. I help them do this by teaching them how to track their nutrition and fuel themselves properly – eating all foods in moderation! I love helping women heal their relationship with food.
What sets me apart from others is that I teach my clients how to be successful on their own by empowering them with the knowledge and tools they need to get and stay healthy long-term, so they don’t have to rely on a coach forever.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have used social media for all the things. Instagram and Facebook, in particular, have helped me network, make local friends and colleagues in the fitness space, connect with new and existing clients, and also to find a mentor!
