Hidden Gems: Meet Becca Dryden & Cortney Hawks of S.L.A.M.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Dryden & Cortney Hawks.

Hi Becca & Cortney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
We actually have pretty similar stories about how we found & fell in love with S.L.A.M. – we both had a second baby & found ourselves looking for community, a way to get out of the house with our kids, and a space where we could reconnect with our bodies postpartum. Neither of us really knew anyone at S.L.A.M. when we started as members, but we quickly found it to be a welcoming & empowering space, and we were hooked.

Being surrounded by other moms & moms-to-be and seeing them encourage and challenge one another was such a breath of fresh air. When S.L.A.M. Nashville’s founder announced her family was relocating, we each knew S.L.A.M. was too important for it to close. We decided to team up as a partnership to keep it going.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Owning and running a small business was definitely a new challenge for both of us, especially while being full-time stay-at-home moms! Not to mention we took over in 2021 when life was still greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We pride ourselves in the social support our community offers, so pandemic protocols required us to be creative and intentional to maintain our support system. We took over the business when it was 3 years old, and year 3 was during the worst of the pandemic.

Because of this, we really didn’t have a clear picture of what to expect for S.L.A.M. or what type of changes & growth would occur. In many ways, it was a leap of faith that we took because we believed so much in what S.L.A.M. is about – forging fitness & friendships as we Sweat Like A Mother together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sweat Like A Mother Nashville?
S.L.A.M. Sweat Like a Mother Nashville is a comprehensive exercise program for women in all stages of motherhood, but it is also so much more than just a fitness group. We are a community and we strive to bring women together as moms and as athletes. We believe in showing our children that your body is the greatest instrument that you will ever own and that through movement you can build strength. Our classes combine fitness with camaraderie and offer an opportunity for women to come together with a common goal of bettering themselves, challenging themselves, and becoming the best version of themselves that they can be.

We currently offer 7 workouts per week – 5 in-person workouts Monday through Friday at 9:30-10:30 am and 2 online early morning workouts at 5:30 am Tuesdays & Fridays. Our home turf is Shelby Park near the red playground, but we relocate during the winter months to Mana Sports Club – an awesome indoor soccer field. No need to find childcare because all of our classes are stroller-friendly. In addition to our workouts, we offer extra (free) social events each month – coffee dates, Moms Night Out, after-class playgroups, and family meet-ups, to name a few.

All S.L.A.M. coaches are certified group fitness instructors with continuing education in prenatal & postpartum athleticism. Our classes are full-body workouts that are appropriate for all fitness levels & stages of motherhood. Because our coaches have the knowledge of appropriate modifications and progressions, everyone can get in a hard workout – whether pregnant, recently postpartum, or a seasoned athlete. We pride ourselves on providing fresh, new workouts for every single class to keep our members on their toes.

We strive to empower women and help them find the strength that already resides within them. We don’t believe women need to “bounce back” after becoming moms – we believe in moving forward into stronger, healthier versions of ourselves.

Any big plans?
We’re always keeping an ear out for possible opportunities to expand to other parts of the city. But our main mission is to make sure moms in our community know about us and what we have to offer.

We might not be the right fit for everyone out there, but if you’re looking for sisterhood, community, and a safe space to vent about motherhood, all while sweating and working toward healthy habits with the encouragement of that community, then we’re here for you!
