Hidden Gems: Meet Brandon Lay of Budget Digs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Lay

Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I love to create something everyday whether it’s with my mind or with my hands. However, too much of one and not the other makes me go crazy. When I started my company Budget Digs I saw an avenue to do both.
Music is what brought me to Music City back in 2010. I’ll be on my musical journey until hopefully I’m on old feeble grandpa but between now and then there are other dreams at hand such as raising my 3 and 5 year old, coaching their basketball teams and feeding our chickens with my wife.
I started Budget Digs in Jan 2024. It’s a heavy equipment rental business servicing contractors or DIYers in Middle Tennessee. I enjoy meeting people trying to tackle a job involving dirt work and bring them quality equipment (skid steers/excavators) to get the job done. It allows me the flexibility to write and record in my studio here at the farm as well as play about 10-15 concerts a year with my band. Plus most days I get be like a big kid in the sandbox.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Struggles? I’ve dabbled one might say. I think anyone in the entertainment business has struggled at one point or another. My lowest point however created the idea and drive to start Budget Digs. I was at a point where I wanted to be home more with family and thought I would just write for other artists. At the end of the day my heart wasn’t committed to waking up and writing a hit for another artist. Plus my artistic instinct keeps my finished product from being “in the middle” enough for current radio.
Budget Digs so far has been a pretty smooth process aside from a few bad apple renters who didn’t treat equipment good.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have skid steers and excavators that I rent to everyone from weekend project oriented homeowners to contractors needing to move earth. With the exponential growth and development happening in the Nashville area currently I saw an opportunity for a mom and pop family owned service that takes the headaches out of renting. I feel like we’re unique because we service people that may feel intimidated by big equipment or a gigantic corporate rental center.
We rent daily, weekly or monthly.

What matters most to you? Why?
Faith and Family.
