Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Mathers.
Hi Brett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Arizona, which is also where my wife and I were living when we had our eldest son. We fell in love with the Southeast after visiting some close friends that had moved to Kentucky. The draw was the slower pace, green landscapes, plentiful water sources, and southern hospitality, among other things, that we wanted our kids to experience. An Electrical Apprenticeship at a nuclear plant in Arizona gave me the experience required to transition into a technical role for a solar O&M provider based in the south. Our family moved from Arizona to a property in Ardmore, Tennessee in 2020. Since our move, we have welcomed another son, our home has evolved to include a horse, pigs, goats, sheep, and dogs, and Mathers Electric, LLC was formed in 2022. The original focus of the LLC was small scale, mostly residential jobs local to the area with two employees. The work shifted more towards the solar industry from past professional experiences and has naturally grown to include a variety of customers, such as O&M providers, power plant owners, utility construction companies (EPCs), equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and more. Mathers Electric has 11 full-time employees going into 2026 and have customers located across the country.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, and there have been various challenges. One of the initial struggles I was faced with when starting the business was administrative responsibilities. My background and experience had been technical in nature so understanding the terminology, accounting requirements, and many other non-technical aspects of running a company was new to me. Also, it took time to balance maintaining and growing the business in a sustainable way, as we do not hold capital assets and rely entirely on demand for our services, so costs can be floated for extended periods of time. Lastly, an ongoing challenge is finding trustworthy individuals to hire. Field technicians require a high level of self-motivation and regulation, they are entrusted to represent the company and expected to maintain safety and quality at all costs.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an industrial electrical contractor hired by entities, such as power companies and generation owners, to perform corrective and preventive maintenance on medium- and high-voltage equipment critical for reliable power production. Our field teams can be found in a solar array, in a substation, performing O&M contract maintenance scopes, replacing a bushing on a main transformer, hydro excavating underground cable faults, completing regulatory compliance testing, commissioning an inverter, and more.
Intentional growth to ensure work quality meets or exceeds customer expectations sets us apart. Our growth rate has enabled us to grow a team with a wide range of capabilities, to sustain the high level of integrity and quality, and easily face adversity. The combination of these things allows us to rarely tell a customer “no”, is what I am most proud of. I recognize relationships matter and have grown the business with this mindset, so I am also proud that word-of-mouth alone is responsible for the work and customers we have.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Providing job opportunities for individuals that, in turn, are able to provide for their families and gain work experience has been personally rewarding. It makes me happy every time the team safely completes a job and the customer is able to restore equipment, because the majority of our customers are losing revenue if equipment is offline.
