Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Maloney.
Hi Dana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
At Jubilee Suites, hospitality runs deep in our family. Inspired by my grandmother Edna’s Joyful spirit of welcoming guests and my mother Alice’s gracious love of family, we’ve built a boutique bed and breakfast that feels like home – only better.
After years of travel with my husband Jim, a U.S. Navy pilot, and raising our three sons in Charlotte, NC, we moved to Fairhope, AL to be near our grandchildren. That’s when we discovered a charming property overlooking Mobile Bay and transformed it into Jubilee Suites, opening our doors in 2018.
From the beginning, our vision has been simple: create an atmosphere of abundance and heartfelt hospitality. Guests enjoy fresh flowers, homemade treats, local art in every room, sunset celebrations, kayak tours, yoga on the bluff, and the vibrant culture of Fairhope.
Nature adds its own magic – ospreys soaring overhead, dolphins playing in the Bay, hummingbirds at the feeders, and sunset that dazzle every evening.
Jubilee Suites is more than a boutique bed and breakfast. It’s a place to relax, reconnect, and feel truly at home while surrounded by beauty.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’re always working to keep a happy balance! Jim retired from Microsoft after our first year here. He’s our chef, general contractor, and my best friend. We love Jim’s homemade sourdough bread and sourdough cinnamon rolls and his attention to the breakfast preferences of each guest and their children.
We’ve continually updated and renovated our historic building which was moved from Mobile, AL to Fairhope in 1947 and opened as a new “Resort Hotel.” After the initial major work, we opened in 2018 and have been improving every year since. We’ve repaired, redecorated, updated, and improved almost every inch of our building and our land, and each year we find more areas to improve.
This summer we joined “Select Registry,” the gold standard in craft lodging. We are extremely happy to be a part of their organization, as it validates all the hard work we’ve put in to provide a 5-star experience for every guest.
We’ve always promoted an atmosphere that focuses on team-building and valuing each person’s individual talents and contributions. We continue to support our employees with a living wage, 401K, PTO and sick time. In return, our employees are team members, rather than contractors, and we are seeing them develop into a “family” in which we all share a true love of hospitality.
We also support our adopted community of Fairhope, AL, via the Rotary, DAR, Plein Air Festival, the Eastern Shore Art Center, the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, the Fairhope Film Festival, the Pensters Writing Group, and many local businesses. Fairhope started as a community of creative and adventurous individuals who traveled here in wagons to build an experimental community with a “fair hope” of success. Today the art, music, writing, and culinary scenes reflect that start. We love to support local businesses and artists, and we display local art throughout our bed and breakfast and in every suite.
We’ve been impressed with Jubilee Suites, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a boutique bed and breakfast on Mobile Bay. We have 200′ of private beach on the shoreline. Our sunsets are incredible, and we celebrate them each evening. We specialize in “Unreasonable Hospitality.” One of our guests told me about the book written by Will Guidara with the same name as our specialty. Our goal has always been to “exceed our guest’s expectations.” Our guests arrive as strangers and leave as family. We invite them into our home and serve them the food that we like best. We give our guests recipes, fresh flowers, seeds and our favorite relaxing tea.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Fresh flowers, snacks and drinks in the suites, our friendly staff, and our outstanding breakfast service makes strangers feel like family in their “home away from home.”
