Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Jones.
Hi Daniel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve lived here my entire life and have grown up with a love for the outdoors and a passion for helping others. In high school, I started a handyman and landscape company that I was able to advertise around my neighborhood using flyers and word of mouth. By the time I graduated high school, I had already been working full-time and running my own business for about two years.
I studied business at UT Martin and found myself plugged in with organizations that promoted entrepreneurship and a spirit for innovation. Each year, I presented at my college’s seminars ideas for new businesses. At these seminars, I walked local businessmen and women through my plans and ideas. The distinguishing factor between my classmates and me – I knew I was going into business for myself as soon as we graduated. No questions about it.
During the winter of my senior year in college, one of my long-time handymanning clients asked me what I knew about decks and if I could help her add one to their home. I dove in head first and had the rebuild completed before my second semester started. I knew then, that decking was my next step.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a young business owner is full of challenges. Starting immediately after college came with its own, unique set of complications. My wife and I got married two weeks after our college graduation. On the flight home from our honeymoon, I filed the paperwork for Harpeth Decks. That was only the beginning.
In our first year as a business, I thought we had seen it all. We dealt with labor shortages, Tennessee’s unpredictable weather, supply chain complications, lack of client and vendor contacts in the community, and the growing pains of a startup. That first year, my wife and I worked late nights, we sacrificed for the business and we prayerfully evaluated if this was God’s path for us.
In our second full year as a business, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most businesses in Tennessee. Fearful, but hopeful, my wife and I ended our lease, moved in with family, and embarked on the unknown as we weathered the pandemic together. It turns out, however, that having the entire state sent home to work was a blessing for my company.
Aside from pricing increases and the supply chain shortages we all felt, my business was able to press through the hard times because people needed their outdoor living spaces. We’ve been working to keep our volume up ever since.
As you know, we’re big fans of Harpeth Decks. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
