Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Ramos.
Hi Garrett, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started a moving business with some buddies going into my freshman year of college. At this time, I was going to school in South Jersey. We wanted to be able to work in college while still having a flexible schedule built around our classes and other priorities. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this side hustle was eventually going to become my career in the future. During my time in South Jersey, I was able to run and work the business for about three years. Over the course of this time, I was able to learn much about running a business, some good and some bad. After graduating from college in 2020, I relocated to Middle Tennessee where I would end up taking a job working at a private school. Upon moving to Tennessee, my business partners and I decided to shut down the moving business in South Jersey. But, I would go on to open up what is now today Simply Southern Moving. My thought at the time was to just be able to supplement my income in addition to my school salary. I would go on to work many weekends and over the course of the summer to grow and scale my “side hustle.” After about three years of growing the business on the side, I decided to take a leap of faith, and go full-time with Simply Southern Moving. Looking back, I am beyond grateful for the reputation that our company has built in Middle Tennessee.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, I would say that growing the business has been relatively smooth. Don’t get me wrong, there have been many obstacles along the way. One of, if not the biggest challenge, was leaving my main source of income and go full-time with the business. Being at the mercy of waiting for clients to call and schedule work was extremely stressful. Not knowing if I would have work the next day, next week, was something I didn’t know I would constantly worry about. When I first went full-time with the business, I realized that I still needed to supplement my income. I decided to start working the night shift driving a box truck for Amazon Relay. I worked this job for about two to three years until I was able to live off of my Simply Southern Moving income. Over the course of this time, I would go multiple days sometimes without sleep, running and working the business during the day and driving a truck at night. Another hard thing that I have found in running a business, is finding and being able to hire good help. Lastly, being a business owner, the work never ends. There is always something that needs to be done, something needing to be improved, or dealing with an issue or problem that has occurred. At times, it seems as if my phone never stops and I am always on the clock.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Simply Southern Moving, we specialize in moving clients belonging from one location to another. We service the Middle Tennessee in addition to doing out of state jobs. We take pride in taking care of clients’ items and ensuring complete customer satisfaction. I believe what sets Simply Southern Moving apart from other moving companies is who we choose to hire and represent our company. I am very particular about who I choose to be a part of the moving team at Simply Southern. My employees are all honest, hard-working, detailed, respectful, kind, and patient people. While we are not perfect, we will always make a situation right whenever our team makes a mistake. I truly believe what sets our business apart from others is the incredible team we have! As a business owner, I understand that in order to have good help, you have to be able pay the good help well and take care of them. Our team members make significantly more than what one would get paid at another moving company. None of what Simply Southern Moving has done would be possible without the employees that represent us every day on the job.
I believe the most important thing about how I run my business is my faith. I am a Christian young man who has chosen to run my business based on biblical and moral principles. Everything that I say and do regarding my business can be traced back to my faith. How I treat my employees and clients, how I handle confrontation and difficult situations, how we decide not to work on Sundays, it all goes back to my faith. The first thing I have to realize is that the Lord Jesus Christ is the one who gave me the ability and health to be able to work, communicate, and think. Without Him, none of this would even be possible. I truly believe that the Lord has blessed our business because He knows my heart and understands my purpose. My goal is not to get rich while my employees go out and work every day. My goal has always been to be able to provide for my family, have the flexibility to coach the game I love, and take care of my help in a way that allows them to take care of their families and give them some flexibility. I understand that I am simply a steward of all that God has given me. None of it is my own, it is all His and He can take it away at any moment if he chooses. At Simply Southern, we treat people the way that Christ would want us to treat others. Kindness, patience, respect, and many other characteristics are all things that can be traced back to how Christ wants us to treat others. The only time you will find the word “success” in the King James Bible is Joshua 1:8. That verse says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Success in the worlds’ eyes is very different to what biblical success is. I want to be successful in the way that Scripture shows us in Joshua 1:8. One other Scripture passage I want to mention is Psalm chapter 1. This passage talks about the “blessed man.” Understanding what true success and “blessings” are based on Scripture has shaped my mind in helping me to understand what truly matters in life. “Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done for me and the business.”
Who else deserves credit in your story?
As mentioned in detail before, none of this would be possible without Jesus Christ.
Secondly, the most important people in my business are my employees. Fletcher Lancaster, Ty Fuqua, and Kyle Teed are the core group of guys who haver been with me from the start. I can’t say enough good about each of these men. They are dependable, hard-working, honest, and some of the best guys I know. They make Simply Southern Moving possible.
Other notable mentions would be Noah Tidwell and Daniel Sohar. Both of these men served as business partners at different times with me at Simply Southern Moving. I am grateful for all of their help, hard work, and the things that they taught me.
