Today we’d like to introduce you to Graham Honeycutt
Hi Graham, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My oldest daughter Mikayla was born with significant special needs in 2013. Her life had many challenges but she also changed my life for the better and taught me many important lessons.
Unfortunately, Mikayla passed away in September 2018. During her life, we worked with an organization called Tucker’s House that provided home modifications for families who have children with disabilities. After her passing, I stayed in touch with the organization and volunteered to organize an annual golf tournament fundraiser. In 2020, the founder was looking to retire and asked me if I would be willing to lead and steward the organization forward. I was selected as the Executive Director for Tucker’s House in April of 2020.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Roads worth traveling are never smooth and will build character.
The largest struggle of my life has been losing my daughter Mikayla. She is a big inspiration and remains a big part of my life and family. The grief of losing a loved one is always difficult and remains a challenge and I am a different person because of my story of loss.
Tucker’s House has also had its host of challenges. Taking over an organization from a founder is not an easy task. I also started my position during the Covid pandemic. Securing funding and continuing to operate during those initial months was quite challenging.
We also pivoted the way we execute our program from an in-house construction team to outsourcing construction to contractors. This pivot has required patience and perseverance to transition people, systems, and processes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Tucker’s House is a nonprofit that provides home modifications for families who have children with disabilities.
We specialize and are known for our Assessment & Inclusive Modification (AIM) Program where we partner a physical therapist who understands the child’s needs and limitations with an architect to draft a plan that will work long-term for the family. We then work with contractors to modify the house according to those specialized plans.
We are proud to have a unique mission that serves a significant need in our community. We provide long-term benefits to the families we serve.
We launched a House to Home video series in 2023 that provides a behind-the-scenes look at the modification process. We plan to launch the season final of our first season in August of 2024. More information here: https://tuckershouse.org/house-to-home/.
