Hidden Gems: Meet Greg Erwin + Taylor Lewis of Aura Haus Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Erwin + Taylor Lewis.

Hi Greg Erwin + Taylor Lewis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi there! My name is Greg Erwin, my partner Taylor Lewis and I are the founders/owners of a new creative studio and event space in Nashville called “Aura Haus Studio”.

Our story started 11 years ago in Los Angeles when we met at the airport (cliché, we know) coming back from 2 totally separate photography jobs. We’ve been partners in life and adventure ever since. When we moved to Nashville barely three years ago. . .we had no idea that soon we’d be partners in business, too!

We fell in love with the city and the new way of life it provided. More importantly, the creative community and industry pulsing throughout Nashville. Once we felt settled into our new environment and gained fresh opportunities and new experiences. . .it lit a fire under us to create something meaningful for the community and us.

We always dreamed of having a creative playground of our own to create art and music, be loud, get weird, and share it with our friends. That dream evolved very quickly into the idea of building out our own studio and starting a business to run it. After months of hunting for a location (and also learning WAY more about commercial real estate than we ever thought we would), we found a suitable space for what we wanted to do. Taylor was for sure the visionary here. What I saw was an empty, brick walled, tin roof, beat up old warehouse full of spiders and cat poop. What she saw was opportunity and a blank canvas. Thankfully we went off of what she was seeing. We committed to the location and were off to the races.

The “race” became a year-long labor of love (occasionally with the help of a few wonderful pals) and with a great deal of blood, sweat, tears, and time we were able to make this vision come to life. We paid so much attention to details that mattered to us along the way, and we both truly believe that it shows. We are so immensely proud of what Aura Haus Studio has become, and getting to watch others use it for a multitude of uses has been one of the most gratifying projects I think either of us have ever taken on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to get to where we are today with a fully operational studio and event space was FAR from smooth. We expected many bumps along the way, and of course, there were way more than expected. The amount of things we didn’t know how to do, or the amount of things we attempted and failed, were endless.

One shining example of this was taking on the task of pouring our own concrete floors for an entire warehouse space, on our own. We botched it horribly, but immediately regrouped, figured out what went wrong, and tried again. It was pricey, it was annoying, it was many adjectives you can’t print, but we did it. (It looks great BTW!)

With all the pitfalls and hiccups along the way, we never let it defeat us completely. There were so many moments of doubt and wanting to quit, and wondering what we had even done or why we took this on. But, we can proudly look back at how we navigated all the challenges of becoming business owners as well as full time general contractors who had to manage their own construction, while also physically building it. Everyday since we started the build, up until even today, has been an absolute learning experience.

We’ve been impressed with Aura Haus Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Aura Haus has expansive indoor and outdoor production studio and event space complete with large cyc wall, a playful fusion of postmodern and mid-century styled rooms, and gorgeous natural light or RGB controlled studio lighting throughout. The creative space also features a private changing room, glam area, and two bathrooms!

If natural light is your thing we have plenty of it, with 3 roll up garage doors that flood natural light end to end. If dialing in your studio lighting is what you desire, use our pre-lit RGB setup at no extra cost to you. It can be used alone or pair it with other lighting of your choice for endless options.

The ample outdoor space is excellent for adding more scenes to your shoot, can be used as a staging area, and is also perfect for stepping away from your set to get a breath of fresh air.

The space was designed to give you all the building blocks for a successful production while giving it a minimal and clean design so you can create exactly what you need.

We are Aura Haus, a place built by artists for artists. We can’t wait to see what everyone creates here.
