Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Martin.
Gregory, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out in corporate accounting with a Fortune 500 company, and that’s how I got my start in the accounting world. I have gratitude for the experience I earned, but the experience itself was also extremely draining. From there, I ventured into small businesses and nonprofits with a bookkeeping firm, where I could take my expertise and apply it in a way that helped entrepreneurs and those willing to make an impact with their financial stability—so they could go farther.
I managed an assortment of clients from all different walks of life, each with different aspirations and dreams for what they wanted to achieve. More than simple data entry, I would also coach them financially on where they were—something I call “the pulse”—and help them consider where they’d like to go with their organization.
Bookkeeping is very important in that it’s the literal foundation any organization builds upon. Books done well provide an accurate view of an organization’s health, allowing executives to make correct calls based on “what is true.”
Since then, I’ve expanded into my own firm, where I’m able to build on that foundation through processes and leadership that bring a white-glove quality to an industry that can sometimes feel lackluster. We currently offer bookkeeping services throughout the United States and will continue to grow into other financial services beyond bookkeeping.
At its core, House of Standard is about building clarity, trust, and lasting structure through partnerships—for businesses, families, and the legacies they’re creating.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Trust is probably the hardest obstacle when building something. And in many ways, you end up facing things you weren’t aware of—or perhaps what you thought would happen, didn’t happen. Of course, when you’re building a business, as every owner knows—or even an Executive Director of a nonprofit knows—there can be scaling issues. Ultimately, if you’re inexperienced, you can take these personally. And you will. Until you pick yourself up again. And again. And again. And finally, you realize this has nothing to do with you per se; it has to do with your thinking being out of touch. That simply is not how the world works, and it’s trying to show you that. It’s simply a lesson.
I haven’t had a rough road, so to speak. It’s been rather smooth and definitely educational. In the end, it’s made me wiser, more disciplined, and generally a better person. It’s good.
The benefit of creating a firm that I can run—instead of one that I work for—is that if I run into a process that isn’t up to date or doesn’t work, guess what? I can change it. I can adapt to anything. If I feel something isn’t right or up to standard, I can update that as well. I really love being able to see a problem and have the ability to solve it—for my clients, for those who work for me, for everyone involved.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
House of Standard is a professional bookkeeping firm that focuses on clarity, structure, and legacy. We help small businesses and nonprofits build the financial foundation they need to grow with confidence. Our work goes beyond numbers—it’s about stability, peace of mind, and the ability to make better decisions for the future.
I often say bookkeeping is like vitals—a pulse. When your books are healthy, everything else functions better. You can see what’s true, where you stand, and where you’re heading. That’s what I help clients do: create order out of chaos and gain clarity about their next steps.
We currently serve clients throughout the United States, and I take pride in offering what I consider a white-glove experience in an industry that can sometimes feel cold or disorganized. We prioritize clean processes, communication, and honesty. Clients know they’re going to get a high standard of service and a partner who genuinely cares about their success.
What sets House of Standard apart is that it’s built on real values—clarity, trust, discipline, and care. I believe professionalism doesn’t have to be impersonal. It can still have heart. At its core, House of Standard is about building clarity, trust, and lasting structure through partnerships—for businesses, families, and the legacies they’re creating.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to play the drums. Originally, when I was young, I played electric guitar and was in multiple bands. I even managed to get a song I wrote on the radio on a show called Local Licks. But fast forward to today—I don’t have a single guitar.
I love the drums, and it all started with playing the snare in band when I was a kid. I’ve always “tapped” — at the dinner table growing up, while driving, etc. It helps me think and focus. I’ve always loved making beats.
The guitar thing only came up because one of my high school friends was picking on me, saying I could never play guitar (he did). I asked my dad to get me a guitar after that. I ended up passing him up substantially in a matter of months and continued to write and write for many years. I never learned a single cover. I’ve never learned how to read music.
At one point, it hit me—I’ve never loved guitar. Haha. It was just because my friend said I couldn’t do it, and I wanted to prove him wrong. I sold everything, bought a drum set, and haven’t stopped playing since. I’ll sit there and listen to any genre and try to figure out what I would do to it. Still can’t read music. And don’t care.
It’s just an amazingly fun hobby and a pretty good workout, especially with some of the more intense and intricate styles.
