Today we’d like to introduce you to Harumi Ortiz.
Harumi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story proves that everything happens for a reason. I’m a 20-years-old and this is how my fencing business started, I have been working for a restaurant for over 4 years but at the beginning of February 2021, I quit my job, I was working six days a week and it got to the point where I was not excited about going to work, very unfulfilled.
I knew it was time for something different in my life but I had no idea what to do. New management pushed me away by telling me that they were going to hire somebody else and that I needed to teach them everything that I knew; but I knew that meant that they were going to cut my hours, that was my breaking point. I ended up quitting and had no job for a week. One day my mother, Luz Maria randomly called my uncle, Victor Canales, to check how he was doing and then they started talking about what had happened at my job and my mother came up with a great idea.
My uncle has been working for over 20 years for fencing companies all around Nashville, TN so he insisted that we should start a fencing company and at first, I was shocked and scared because I didn’t know anything about fences but I knew having my uncle as my mentor and my mother as my guide would help out a lot. So we did it. Truth Fence was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had thoughts of giving up when we first started. I used to be anxious about talking to customers and telling them prices but once I started seeing the entire process from finding the best material price to drawing out an estimate to seeing how hard the installers work to put up a fence, I am not anxious anymore, everything is worth our time and money. Also, this business is very male-dominated, so it made me a little nervous to show up to the jobs to measure because I didn’t want them to reject us.
I am appreciative of how everything kind of worked out for me. What I love most about my job is seeing the finished work and how happy customers are once the job is finished.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Truth Fence?
We are a family-owned fencing company that specializes in wood, aluminum, steel, PVC/ vinyl fences, decks, and gates. Any idea that you have we can make it happen. As our slogan says, true care for fencing. We value our customers no matter how small or big the job is and we work hard to leave them satisfied with a fence or deck that they can enjoy forever.
How do you define success?
I once heard somebody said failure only happens when you give up and that stuck with me. I think success is all about taking risks and not giving up.
