Hidden Gems: Meet Houston Reasonover of Clark and Addison Accounting LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Reasonover

Hi Houston, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a Middle TN native, growing up in Old Hickory. I graduated from TN Tech University in 2011 with a degree in accounting. After graduating college I began working for a local tax firm.
My wife and I had our first child in 2018 and our family quickly grew to a family of 5 with two more children born by 2022. We have (like most families) learned how important family and family time are and how important, but secondary, time at the office should be. In the fall of 2023 I left the firm I was working for. My wife and I established Cark & Addison Accounting LLC so I could have more flexibility with my work schedule and time available for my family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has unexpectedly and thankfully been smoother than I expected and planned for. That isn’t to say there haven’t been some stumbling blocks and tough lessons learned, but overall the transition to self-employment has been great.
Like all business owners, I have had to learn and navigate the challenges of budgeting, deciding if/when to hire employees and contractors, deciding how much or little to advertise, networking and building relationships with other businesses, and the administrative tasks of owning your own business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Clark and Addison Accounting LLC?
Clark and Addison Accounting LLC is a husband and wife owned, full service accounting firm with a primary focus on tax preparation. The company’s client base is generally exclusive to individuals and small businesses.

We prepare tax returns for individuals, sole proprietors, partnerships, LLCs, and S-Corporations.

We do some bookkeeping in house, but depending on the needs of the client, some bookkeeping is referred out to Kelly Wigington at Summer Dove Bookkeeping. Her focus is strictly bookkeeping and we’ve informally teamed up to provide a 1-2 punch tax and bookkeeping team that can’t be beat.

Clark and Addison also offers tax planning and general consulting services. Clients often call for a 20-30 minute conversation to think-out-loud and talk through business ideas and problems. I’m there to be a sounding board to analyze the situation and to help cover all aspects and considerations of the idea/problem/situation/etc.

Brand wise, I am very proud that clients know and trust us for honesty, doing things the right way, and being personable.

What sets us apart from other accounting firms is the relationship build with each client and our personal service. Every client is treated like family and every client’s tax return is treated with the same level of care and attention to detail that I put into my personal tax return.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I intellectually always knew how important the relationship and trust with a client is, but this journey has really cemented to me that the client relationship and level of trust is the only thing that matters. For example, I’ve had clients ask me to handle their affairs after they pass away because quote “You’re about the only person I trust with my money”. It can be equal measures of overwhelming and flattering.

The number of clients that refer their friends and family members is humbling. I have several groups of clients where I prepared the tax returns for the initial client and then they’ve referred their parents (both husband’s and wife’s), their siblings, their kids, and in same cases, their grandkids. Treating the initial client with care and attention to detail resulted in picking up an additional 8 clients that are in their immediate family.

Pricing:

  • Fees are determined by the complexity of the tax return and the required forms.
  • Generally individual tax return fall between $150 and $500.
  • Generally business tax returns fall between $400 and $1,000
