Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Carty
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up as a classically trained ballerina, and I started Pilates reformer when I was 14. This was the start of my health and wellness journey. I went to Indiana University and danced in their world-renowned classical ballet department while studying nutrition. After college, I danced professionally with Ballet Theatre of Ohio and taught private Pilates reformer and small group fitness classes. I moved to Nashville with my husband in 2008 and began teaching Pilates, Barre, Strength and many other fitness classes at different gyms throughout Nashville. I did this for 15 years and then finally opened my home studio after the birth of my second child. My studio is called Momentum by JCarty. I have been open for exactly a year!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is never a smooth road 🙂
There is a lot of burnout in the fitness industry. At one point, I taught 15-17 group fitness classes weekly, which is A LOT of stress on your body. I have taken breaks here and there. We also moved to South Florida for a few years and moved back. Then, I became a mom, and raising my children became my priority.
The pandemic was probably the biggest hurdle. Everyone was very content at working out at home. It was also a blessing, though. When I returned to teaching classes, I found the value in small group classes (6-8 people). It created more of a sense of a community and bond. I really got to engage more with my clients and their lives. I was less focused on the quantity of my fitness classes and more on the quality.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Momentum by JCarty?
My business is only a year old! For the first year, I have focused on small group classes, such as Pilates, Barre, and Strength. We did a lot of outdoor workouts, and when the weather was crummy, we were inside. My space is tucked away in the hills of West Meade. It feels like you are working out in Percy Warner Park. Outdoor workouts naturally increase your serotonin levels, so not only are you getting the physical benefits, but you are also reaping the emotional benefits as well.
I have also partnered with other women in the fitness industry and held “POP UP” events. These have included extra fitness classes like POUND, Sound Bath, and NEW U meditation. They have been ways to gather people and create more of a community and fellowship. My goal is to offer a safe space for people to be themselves and never feel judged.
This year, my business will offer its first Wellness Retreat in Nashville. It will be 12-8pm on Sept. 28th. The retreat will start with a POUND workout, followed by a barre class, meditation, hikes, a guest speaker in women’s health, dinner, and end with a Sound Bath outside by the pool. Space will be limited to a group of 15 women. I am hoping to offer a time of serenity and connection for those seeking a PAUSE or RESET this fall.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
