Hidden Gems: Meet John Johnson of TuneDesigner

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Johnson.

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I did my first recording session as a bass guitar player for a local gospel group in 7th grade. That Nashville studio experience launched me into an obsession for recording and producing music. As a teenager my 2 brothers and I formed a trio, and we decided to make our own records.

We purchased an 8-track reel-to-reel recorder and a mixing board which I still have. After a few years of recording ourselves, I started recording and helping other songwriters. I spent many years having “real jobs” like building cabinets and welding until I was finally able to turn my passion for recording into a full-time job. I’ve spent the last 25 years making music as my only profession.

In recent years I realized that I could offer more value to an artist if I were to help them more as an online source for recording. My goal was to make recording a song as easy and stress-free as possible. We developed a process that allows artists and songwriters a way to record and release a high-quality product without having to leave home. This is how TuneDesigner was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Early on the struggle for me was how to balance being a music producer while also having a family and a life outside of music. To be successful in any business, particularly in the music business, you have to be extremely driven and self-motivated.

I was the poster child for being a workaholic, and that is not a healthy way to live your life. It’s something you just have to work through and learn how to say no to things. Ultimately, I just had to trust that God would meet our needs and He has done just that.

My wife of 26 years and my 2 kids have been my biggest supporters throughout this journey.

TuneDesigner is an online recording studio. We make it possible for songwriters and artists all over the world to produce world-class recordings without having to leave home. We are best known for our work in country music, but we cover a lot of other genres. Even though we are an online studio, the process we have developed is very personal and our goal is to make your song sound exactly as you want it to.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I had the best parents in the world. They raised us up in church. Their number one priority for us was to make sure that we had a relationship with Jesus Christ. I’m very thankful for that! They also bought us every kind of musical instrument in the world.

The first thing I learned to play was the ukulele, then the bass, then piano and guitar. My parents never complained about all the noise we made practicing at all hours. My main instrument is the piano. I had some great teachers but I ultimately taught myself how to play by ear on an old upright that sat in our living room.
