Today we’d like to introduce you to Karii Jones.
Hi Karii, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Well, I was born and raised in Nashville. I was actually adopted as a baby but really didn’t find out till I was around 11. Growing up I used to draw and paint for fun and my parents encouraged me to follow my dreams for being the next Leonardo Da Vinci. I attended Nashville school of the arts where I got my first taste of freedom to create which led to dancing and modeling and acting. I became more than an artist thanks to that school. Breaking into adulthood and graduating I eventually went to art school, then diesel technology school, and then on to culinary school. The skills I learned from all of it made me who I am today…and even then, I still strive to learn more about anything that catches my attention. This curiosity led me to finding my biological family and finding my family led me to discovering my family tree and learning so much more about who I really am.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh definitely I learned at an early age how to deal with obstacles and the challenges pushed me to where I am now. When I was younger, I dreamed of days I would find my family. Laws changed around my 18th birthday where I was unable to find them. Life went on, I had to start adulting I had a beautiful daughter so I put it on the back burner till I was 28. Sent in the necessary paperwork to DHS, and even took an AncestryDNA test with the TLC tv show long lost family. I found my mom and my family which lead to me discovering and building my family tree. That tree led to research and endless nights of searching through archives to find my ancestors. Once I realized what a gift it was to know where you came from, I wanted to help others heal and fill that void.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Majik Trap. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Majik Trap is a metaphysical trap house that is changing the narrative of trap culture by healing the same community that started it. We sell metaphysical products such as ethically sourced smudging tools, hand-poured manifestation candles, 100s of tumbled crystals, authentic crystal jewelry at an affordable price so we can manifest the life that we deserve. Finding my ancestors started me on this journey of spirituality and helping others on this journey is my passion, I don’t mind doing it for the rest of my life. When I started this business there were no black-owned metaphysical shops in Nashville and certainly no affordable ones that catered to black people and connecting with our roots while also circulating the black dollar. I’m just proud that my business is still flourishing even without a brick-and-mortar. I mostly do pop-up shops and events where I can help my customer figure out what works for them on their journey. My crystal jewelry collection is like no other in the city plus I’m the neighborhood crystal dealer!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The fact that I do this to help and heal others. My prize is knowing that I did something positive that can eventually help that person help and heal others. That’s the best feeling in the world.
