Hidden Gems: Meet Katrina Norman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Norman.

Katrina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had a passion for cooking. I would always watch my Grandmother cook. And when I became old enough, I helped her in the kitchen as much as possible. I started baking cookies in 1999, I worked as a Baker for Cookie Bouquet for five years. I absolutely loved the job. The Kitchen is truly my happy place. Cookie Bouquet eventually closed leaving me unemployed for a year. I decided to attend College and get back into the workforce. I was a Customer Service Rep. for about 14 years. Very unhappy. (No Peace) I was tired of paying ridiculously high prices for custom cakes for my son’s birthday. Most of the time, they weren’t good, but they looked good. In 2016, I decided to experiment with cakes part-time. It hasn’t been easy but it was definitely worth it. I quit my full-time job two years ago. My only focus is CAKES and growing my brand. I’m looking forward to the future of Sugarlipsbakeryllc…

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, my road has not been smooth. With any new business, you start second guessing your decision to step out on faith. The first time I didn’t have a least five orders for the week, I panicked. So we started marketing more and word of mouth has made a tremendous difference…

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sugarlipsbakeryllc is a female black-owned business. I started with nothing and no skills in cakes. I started out as a cookie baker. We specialize in custom cakes. My name and logo speak for itself. I’m proud of the cakes flavor and presentation. A lot of the time, you get one or the other. We are the package deal on flavor and presentation. Our customer service is Top Tier. We do whatever we can to please the customer and ensure repeat business.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Very quiet and reserved.
