Hidden Gems: Meet LaZundra Mangrum of Thimbles & Threads

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaZundra Mangrum.

Hi LaZundra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved creating, and my passion for it began in high school when I took a sewing class. My grandma, however, had her heart set on me becoming a nurse, so pursuing fashion design as a career wasn’t exactly encouraged—and I didn’t dare mention it.

Fast forward 21 years later, I decided to revisit that spark and took my first class in 2011 at a small, locally owned business that, unfortunately, no longer exists. One of the ladies there saw something very special in me and began encouraging me to try new skills I had never attempted before—such as quilting and even small furniture pieces. At the time, I planned to build these skills simply to design for myself, but it quickly turned into something much bigger.

What started as a personal passion grew into a calling. I went from completing small projects to doing alterations for family members, and soon after, friends began to notice my gift and encouraged me to turn it into a business. It didn’t happen right away—honestly, I battled a lot of anxiety about taking that leap—but eventually, faith and passion pushed me to create Thimbles & Threads, where I now design custom, tailor-made clothing and teach others the art of sewing.

Through it all, my husband and our sons have been incredibly supportive—from allowing me to design and create for them, to assisting with my sewing classes, to offering a pat on the back or a simple “How’s your day?” when I have a lot to do. Their love and encouragement keep me grounded and motivated to keep pursuing what I was truly called to do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m still in the infancy stage of my business, which means I wear all the hats—from designing and sewing to marketing and planning classes. On top of that, I still work a full-time job, which helps fund my business and allows me to grow at my own pace. It’s a lot to manage, but I’m not complaining—it’s all part of the journey.

One of the biggest challenges has been consistently filling classes and creating projects that appeal to different skill levels. Another hurdle is that some people don’t fully understand or see the value in this skillset and the craftsmanship that goes into creating tailor-made pieces. Despite those challenges, I see each obstacle as a learning experience that continues to shape me as both a business owner and creative.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Thimbles & Threads?
Thimbles & Threads is a creative sewing business that combines craftsmanship, style, and teaching. I design tailor-made clothing for all genders, specializing in custom pieces that reflect each client’s individuality and fit them beautifully. Whether it’s a statement garment for a special occasion or an everyday piece that makes someone feel confident, I take pride in creating clothing that feels personal and intentional.

In addition to designing custom attire, I also offer sewing classes for all skill levels—from complete beginners to those looking to refine their techniques. The classes are offered in group settings and private sessions for all ages, as well as couples’ date nights for those looking to learn something new together. My goal is to create a fun, relaxed, and encouraging environment where people can learn, create, and discover the joy of sewing. Each project—whether it’s a removable pillow cover, apron, or seasonal piece—is designed to help students build confidence and practical skills.

What truly sets Thimbles & Threads apart is the personal touch. Every design and class is approached with care, patience, and a genuine love for the craft. I don’t just sew garments—I create experiences that inspire creativity and confidence.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Thimbles & Threads was built from passion, perseverance, and purpose. It’s a brand that reminds people it’s never too late to return to something you love and turn it into something meaningful. More than anything, I want readers to know that Thimbles & Threads isn’t just about fashion—it’s about creativity, community, and celebrating the beauty of handmade work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t describe the successes or challenges in my life and business as luck. Everything I’ve experienced has come through faith, hard work, and perseverance. I’ve been married to my loving husband, Kenneth, for 27 years, and together we’ve built a strong foundation for our family, which includes our two adult sons and one grandson. Our family isn’t perfect, but our faith and love for one another help us push through any difficulties that come our way.

Professionally, I work as a Senior Software Quality Analyst, and I truly enjoy what I do. My career allows us to personally fund and sustain Thimbles & Threads, which I’m very grateful for. Of course, like anyone else, I have moments of disappointment—when engagement is low or I feel I’m lacking a certain skill—but I remind myself that this is a process and my own journey, and I’m not in competition with anyone.

Along the way, I’ve been blessed to connect with other like-minded women who help me stay focused and encouraged. I’ve partnered with a local nonprofit, YCMIHOC, which has graciously opened its doors for me to host my sewing classes at their facility. I’ve also had the opportunity to present some of my creations in a couple of runway showcases hosted by my mentor and sorority sister, Krista Davis, which was an incredible confidence booster. Returning to school is also on the horizon as I look to hone my skills even further. These experiences remind me that success isn’t about luck—it’s about faith, community, growth, and a steady commitment to the process.
