Hidden Gems: Meet Lisa Shearer of Bloom & Branch Organic Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Shearer.

Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I opened up my own spa after years of honing my craft and building my clientele as an aesthetician in spas around the Nashville area.

When I initially decided to venture out on my own, it was a HUGE leap of faith. I was so worried about everything that could go wrong – what if I fail? With the help and encouragement of my husband and business partner, Paul, I finally found a nice room to rent inside a wellness center, and we officially opened for business.

It wasn’t long after we opened that we started to see some really promising growth. It quickly became clear that we would have to start looking for a space to potentially expand into. During these early days of our business, I was doing almost all of the day-to-day tasks on my own. From scheduling clients and answering the phone to placing product orders and – of course – performing the actual services… I was doing it all, and it was exhausting.

In the meantime, Paul had found a great potential storefront for us to lease in an awesome location in the city. He started negotiating the deal, and I began to excitedly imagine what it would be like for us to get to open our very own space. As we were negotiating the deal I was actually pregnant with our first child. Long story short, after the birth of our daughter, we received the official word what we would not be able to move into the storefront – the deal fell through. We were so disappointed, but trying to rely on God to give us something. I had already taken maternity leave and given up our lease on my old location, and I had clients on the books for my eventual return to work in just a couple of short months.

One day, when Paul and I were out touring daycares, I saw a “For Lease” sign in the window of a retail store in Franklin, TN. The location seemed great and on top of that, it was previously occupied by a spa. This meant that we could get started a lot sooner than we could have otherwise. Paul immediately called the leasing agent and got to work.

Down to the wire – It was only three days before I was supposed to start seeing clients that we got the keys to our new place! In 48 hours, we managed to clean the space, move in, and score 100 on our inspection. All of this while taking care of a now 2-month old girl – it was a wild ride, to say the least!

We had a soft launch in late 2019 and our official grand opening in February of 2020. We were finally open for business in our new location… that is until COVID-19 forced us to close our doors for six weeks in March. The pandemic was a challenging time for our business. We lost both of our new employees and did our best to stay afloat in spite of a major decrease in client appointments. If that wasn’t difficult enough, it was also during this time that we received a cease and desist from a large out-of-state company threatening to sue us over the use of our name. What else could go wrong?

We don’t take it for granted that despite all of these incredible obstacles, we were able to survive and even grow during what was such a hard time. We have found some amazing new people to join our team and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any business, there have been so many struggles – almost too many to count. We have had to survive a global pandemic. We have received legal threats from large companies. We have lost employees. We have even been without a location to operate our business out of for a short time. All of this while taking care of a young child. Every one of these challenges presents an excellent opportunity to learn, though, and we really try to come out stronger on the other side of every obstacle we face.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck as much as I believe in providence. There have been so many times in our business where the only explanation for us making it through has been through the faithfulness of God. A perfect example of this is when we found our new location. It seemed incredibly unlikely at the time that we would be able to find a space that would fit our business in less than two months, and it was surely impossible that even if we did find one, that we would be able to build it out to our needs in such a short time. Providence is the only explanation for us being able to find a space in a great location that was previously occupied by a spa. That is incredible. We always try to be the best stewards of everything that we have been given, including this business, but in the end, we know that we can’t control whether we succeed or fail. We can only trust in Him.
